1. 2020 election campaign – 6 days to go

With six days to go to election day the campaigns have reached interesting stages although the underlying trends and events appear to be good for the left.

  2. Labour Increases Protection for Kauri Dieback

In an announcement that will probably gain them few extra votes but still warms the cockles, Labour have promised to put Kauri Dieback on the same scale of national disease response as Bovine Tuberculosis and Kiwifruit PSA.

  3. Jacinda Ardern and New Zealand Health

Jacinda Ardern is a contender for winning a Nobel Peace Prize.  If she were to get it for anything, it will be for her leadership response to the national health crisis response to COVID19.

  4. What Have Labour Done For The Poor, Exactly?

There’s been plenty of criticism about Labour’s policies not being effective enough to alleviate poverty. Time for a bit of perspective.

  5. The Greens on urban farming

This is exactly the kind of approach the Green Party would like to encourage – it’s strategic, it’s intergenerational and it recognises the interconnectedness of our people, the environment and local communities.

  6. Labour’s social welfare policy

Labour has announced that if elected they will significantly increase abatement levels for beneficiaries and reinstitute the Training Incentive Allowance Scheme, the policy that Paula Bennett famously had the benefit of but then cancelled once she was Minister.

  7. The Greens sticking to their guns (and their values)

The Greens just boldly stepped up their election campaign.

  8. No Right Turn: If police think this is lawful and ethical, why did they try to hide it?

“The Privacy Commisisoner has said explicitly that any use of facial recognition needs a high level of scrutiny, which for a government agency, effectively means their approval. Police deliberately avoided doing that.”

  9. US v China: new Cold War or new Opium War?

The Trump administration has declared war on China, and there is much speculation in the punditry as to whether or not this is a new Cold War similar to that waged post World War 2 against Russia. In my opinion, the 19th century Opium Wars may offer a more appropriate analogy, albeit with a likely different outcome.

  10. Vote No to Cannabis Reform

Ten reasons to vote against cannabis law reform this election.

  11. Jacinda’s speech to the Labour campaign launch

Jacinda Ardern’s speech to the Labour 2020 campaign launch.

  12. Strategic voting is a bad thing unless you live in Epsom

Nick Smith has publicly opposed a change to the electoral system that would allow strategic manipulation of the electoral system.  But only by Māori.

  13. Trade Unionism: Does it have a future

There is no blueprint for building a stronger more effective trade union movement. There are many, who each and every day wake up and do exactly that.

  14. The Greens are thinking ahead

The Greens have released a detailed policy document that sets out what they want to achieve if they are part of the next Government and their Labour Relations policies could be considered to be more pro union than Labour’s policies.

  15. Green Party rocks their new Guaranteed Minimum Income policy

The Greens’ audacious new social security policy, the Poverty Action Plan, places manaakitangi and compassion at the centre. It includes guaranteed income across the board for those in need, reorientating ACC to include illness and prioritise care, support for children and single and double parented families, and it pays for it all by taxing some of the assets and income of the wealthy.

  16. Things that will live

Despite downbeat economic predictions and an imminent global recession, the New Zealand recovery offers opportunities for entrepreneurial success that exceed anything we’ve seen for decades.

  17. Strike Force Raptor is no more

National has backed away from its policy of creating Strike Force Raptor Police Unit, a unit based on an Australian force dedicated to terrorising possible gang members.

  18. NZ Police abandon Armed Response Teams

We have a model of policing by consent and that means we need the vast majority of people to see as legitimate the style in which we’re policing and it’s been clear to me that there has not been acceptance of this as an appropriate style of policing in New Zealand. – Police Commissioner Andrew Coster

  19. National Has Found a Moral Compass

National has embarked on a moral crusade to not lose the Election.

  20. Is National Just Inconsistent or Incompetent?

National’s new job-creation scheme appears to be inconsistent with their desire to fully re-instate the 90-day trial period.

  21. Ko Paora Goldsmith tenei

National’s new brains trust has not had a great day today.  They responded to claims that their front bench looked awfully white and had no Tangata Whenua by claiming that Paora Goldsmith was from Ngāti Porou.  The only trouble was that he wasn’t.

  22. Todd Muller is Simon Bridges with less personality

Todd Muller has announced a front bench that resembles a National Party front bench from 30 years ago.  And his first live interview on national television did not go as well as he hoped.

  23. Israel’s proposed annexation of Jordan Valley

With Benjamin Netanyahu now reinstated as Prime Minister of Israel, the big annexation of the Jordan Valley is gathering momentum.

  24. New electorate boundaries

I missed it, but we got the new electorate boundaries on Friday. Now electorate boundaries simply don’t matter as much as they used to because of MMP. These days mostly the only people who notice them are electorate MPs, political parties that are too close to the 5% list party boundary, and of course sock-puppet parties like Act and their National party hand. Plus of course political blog sites.

  25. New Zealand Tourism after 2020

Post Covid-2019 what is going to happen to New Zealand’s tourism market?

  26. This is not the revolution

The Corvid-19 virus is turning us all into cautious conservatives.

  27. On Mike the Moron and handling infectious diseases

Five days ago Mike Hosking was representing his paymasters with his reflection of their basic ignorance of history.  Then demanding caution in dealing with covid-19. Yesterday he panicked for immediate action to close the borders which government did anyway later that day. It is just dangerous to give a public platform to a dithering moron who be at home in 1918. Perhaps he should read the pandemic plan?

  28. What the Government has done for beneficiaries

In Parliament this week Carmel Sepuloni outlined action being taken by the Government to implement the recommendations of the Welfare Expert Advisory Group designed to improve the plight of beneficiaries.

  29. National is going low on law and order issues

Over the past week National has shown a willingness to take really base aggressive positions on law and order issues for political advantages no matter what principles are at stake.  And at the same time show a complete lack of understanding of the issues that are involved.

  30. Sustainable NZ not so sustainable after all

It appears that National’s dream of an alternative Green party that would drive the real Green Party below the threshold is in tatters with news that Sustainable NZ is on the skids.

  31. The MPs go to Waitangi

Yesterday the political parties were welcomed onto the upper Marae at Waitangi.  Jacinda Ardern took the occasion to give a stock take of what the Government was doing to address Iwi concerns, Andrew Little gave his speech totally in te reo, and Simon Bridges chose to use the opportunity to politic.

  32. Guest Post – What is wrong with the left?

Guest post from old maaaaate cans about recent Stuff guest columns attacking the left for not civilised enough and wondering if it is because of right wing insecurity.
