Defending the law change on radio this morning, National Leader Christopher Luxon was dismissive. “If the least someone can do is go get registered and enrolled to vote 12 days out from election day, it’s not rocket science for us.”

The key words there are the last couple: “for us”. Because Luxon is preaching to a converted audience of enrolled voters who listen to the news. That audience may struggle to understand the extent to which younger people have moved on from traditional newspapers and broadcast media.

They’re not blowing bubbles, they’re simply in different bubbles, where ‘politics’ is a bad word. Their friends aren’t even talking about voting.

The key points here are that Luxon understands perfectly well the implications of his law change and that he doesn’t care (aka cry me a river). Arguably, this was one of the main reasons for the law change, so Luxon can stop his smug laughter and tell the people that he’ll do anything to win and even play Dirty, just like Trump, Winston Peters, and other authoritarian populists.
