1. What do we want in 2019?

It’s election year again- but only for local elections this time. What do you want your local candidates to address?

  2. China; Hack to the Future!

China has apparently been sprung hacking hundreds of western businesses and Government agencies, including some here in NZ. Should we be worried?

  3. The Eminem decision and National’s electoral return

The Court of Appeal has determined that National should pay Eminem $225,000 for use of his music. This may create rather large legal problems for them.

  4. You’ve got to lively up yourself …

National have responded to the Government’s medicinal cannabis law by suggesting hordes of cancer sufferers will hang around schools smoking joints.

  5. Safe from prying 5Eyes

I like my Huawei phone. Apparently the US National Security Agency can’t break its encryption. That’s presumably the “security” issue why Spark is being blocked from using Huawei, and why Meng Wanzhou is held hostage in Canada at the behest of US neocons.

  6. Yanking our chain

    Categories: uncategorized

Tracy Watkins is in Korea paid for by the US to head off any support fro President Moon’s visit here. The US security chiefs are here in Wellington today with the 40-grit sandpaper. A high-ranking Russia “expert” from the UK was here last week because they thought Winston Peters wasn’t sufficiently outraged by the Skripal false flag affair. We’re in the gun in the information wars.

  7. We’re dreaming of a White Christmas

Social media has erupted because a Santa Claus was not a fat old white guy with false facial hair.

  8. TERFed Out: UPDATED

Labour MP Louisa Wall has written an opinion piece in response to Herald columnist Rachel Stewart’s attack earlier in the week on the trans community and their LGBTIQ+ allies. It’s very good.

UPDATE: Rachel Stewart, as predicted, has blocked me on twitter. But not before going full on racist.

  9. Spooked!

The GCSB ban on Spark’s use of Huawei technology means this government  has gone from “honest broker” to poodle in a very short time. Pressure has been applied by the US and others, apparently fearing we are the “soft underbelly” of the Five Eyes spy network. Maybe its time we got out of that too – it was designed for war.

  10. The bigotry of lemmings – the China scare

I can’t think of the number of countless times that I have seen scare stories about someone wanting to take over this society and/or the world. Sometimes they are even correct about intent, but usually they are not. Usually the difference between what is insinuated and whatever facts are known makes those making such insinuations just look like attention-seeking nuts.

  11. Worrisome Centrist Clowns.

I don’t generally have a problem with clowns. But these clowns are dangerous. When mainstream media promotes centrist clowns promoting fascist clowns….

  14. 14 Million Yemenis and a Diplomatic Nightmare

In Yemen right now, children are living in the worst humanitarian crisis we have seen in the last 100 years.

  15. All that is wrong with America’s democracy

In Georgia, despite the Repbublican candidate who oversaw the election process engaging in the mass disenfranchisement of Democrat voters, the removal of voting machines to make voting in Democrat areas more difficult and baseless smearing of the Democrat candidate, the result is on a knife edge and a second vote is a possibility.

  16. Jeff Sessions resigns as Attorney General

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has resigned at the President’s request and has been replaced by someone who thought that Mueller’s investigation into POTUS went too far.

  17. Why this mid term result?

What can we take from the US mid term election results?

  18. Bryce Edwards: Just another political simpleton

I can only describe Bryce Edwards spin about what a “The Standard” post means is that it is complete bullshit. This site is not the editorial and political monolith. But what else do you expect from a political simpleton with a limited understanding of actual debate. Like Mike Hosking, he is far more suited to a broadcast medium where he doesn’t get robust debate on their inane explanations of real world politics.

  19. What is up with National?

National appears to be rattled and introverted right now.  Is the continuing saga involving Jami-Lee Ross the cause?

  20. An Ineffectual Opposition Is Bad News

An ineffectual Opposition creates a vacuum that will be filled by the Mainstream and Social Media as they will assume the role of unelected and non-representative opposition in effectuo.

  21. A Bigger Better Budget!

An odd detail or change was buried within the IPCC report that came out last week.

  22. Shake It Up, Taylor Swift, Shake It Up

There is a long a proud history of musicians adding their weight to the Democratic cause in the United States, but Taylor Swift’s recent action is about as on-message as you can get.

  23. The Kavanaugh confirmation hearing

The Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearing last week showed two extremes, one person describing a painful event in her past life and another person angrily denying that anything happened and claiming it was all about him.

  24. Pretty legal

National has another potential copyright problem involving the use of music without permission.

  25. The War on Drugz

Jacinda Ardern has announced that New Zealand will not sign up to Donald Trump’s global call to action on drugs. Will Simon Bridges do the responsible thing and agree with her that the announcement is a misplaced attempt to continue the currently failing approach to drugs?

  26. Tax Working Group report depressing reading

The Tax Working Group says the gaping holes in our tax system make it unfair and undermine its integrity, but the prospect of the electorate embracing even its limited recommendations on taxing capital gains make for depressing contemplation.

  27. GDP figures expose business confidence survey nonsense

ANZ Bank’s Outlook business confidence survey has been forecasting gloom and doom for the economy ever since the surprise election result turfed out the National Party. Today’s GDP data showed the economy has actually been pumping along faster than the Reserve Bank believes is good for it.

  28. Quite a day or two then!

A quick smorgasbord of reported news from Syria, to China and Sweden, to antisemitism and (hidden behind the links) an interview with (hopefully) the first woman who will serve as President of the USA.

UPDATE: Turnbull to quit tomorrow, if ballot called.

    UPDATE: Julie Bishop prepares bid.

UPDATE: Scott Morrison wins, Dutton defeated 45-40.

  33. The Pope’s Letter to All Believers

The pope missed a great recent chance to state that accused abusers should be walked to the nearest Police station, make written statements, face trial, hopefully jailed, then defrocked, and excommunicated.
