Reprehensible People.

“Kavanaugh” – the name lends itself to being enunciated with a certain pluminess, don’t you think?

Writehanded: The nature of gendered abuse

Sarah Wilson at writehanded.org writes “Amid accusations that our Prime Minister deliberately mislead the country by getting pregnant and will now be an unfit leader due to “baby brain” and motherhood, I’m reflecting on how it feels to be a woman in the public eye. You can almost always guarantee that when someone shouts “this isn’t a gender issue!” – it is. And the issues are many.”

Shaking the Tree

When an apple tree is shaken, pips can fall to the ground and germinate. And then things grow back more or less as before.

All Apologies

Did commenters on the recent Julian Assange post overstep the mark in their defence of the Wikileaks founder? Are they really rape apologists?

If the voice fits….?

Politics has traditionally been men’s business.  Gradually women have come to be given more space in this sphere of public activity.  However, there are still strains of traditional masculine values evident in political activity, organisation and debate.  How much does Key trade in

Fuck inequality! Fuck poverty! Fuck the Nat govt!

There are sobering & harrowing stories coming out of AAAP’s Action Impact at Mangere this week. It exposes the vast inequalities & poverty existing in NZ.  Vote to end this destruction of humanity & democracy! Vote for compassion, caring & sharing! VOTE LEFT!

TVNZ’s white male syndrome

Songs from the inside out

I looked at some local newspapers to get away from the endless support for neoliberal values that dominates out MSM.  I found people living with unaffordable housing – & how the power of song can unite people in their struggles at the sharp end of the big inequality gap. Maori TV, “Songs from the Inside”.

Down among the women: limits of ‘growth’

The GDP measure fails to account for life sustaining activities outside paid employment.  Women do the majority of such unpaid work.  A gender blind approach to financial crises is socially and economically destructive.   An alternative, cooperative social and economic model would attend to gender and other diversities.

Poverty, women & rape culture

In our highly gendered socio-economic system that has institutionalised poverty, gendered violence, sexual violence and rape culture, low income women are multiply disadvantaged.  Trigger warning: This post addresses some difficult and sensitive issues about poverty, women and rape culture. Subsequent comments will be tightly moderated.

Shhh! It’s the ‘P’ word.

You don’t have to be white and male and financially wealthy to assume a prominent position within systems of patriarchy, but it helps. And you don’t have to be financially strapped and black and female to feel the full weight of patriarchy always pressing down on you, but it helps.
