    Example of how the Employment Leave Bill will cut workers’ pay

    An airport firefighter works 50 hours a week, including 10 hours a week of overtime, which is paid time and a half. Under the current law, their pay while on leave reflects how much they’re paid while working, including their overtime pay. So, if they go on leave for a week, they’d get their usual pay of $2,145, including $585 in overtime pay.

    Under the Employment Leave Bill, they will be paid a 12.5% loading for their overtime hours, but those overtime hours no longer count towards their pay while on leave. So, their weekly pay will be $2,193.75, including $633.75 overtime pay, but their pay while on leave goes down to $1560. This adds up to them losing $1,267.50 a year.

      With all the fuss about Cook and Kupe, the latest news about the two new Cook Strait ferries has underplayed the huge expenditure to create two new ferry terminals.
      …
      That’s the sort of things that we SHOULD be concerned about. Stay focused people! Ignore the silly [Cook and Kupe] name debate!

      A few years ago we had the prospect of a brand-new, purpose-built terminal, as befitting the new soon-to-arrive state-of-the art ferries. But no, in a fit of pique, the Finance Minister cancelled the whole damn lot, citing cost overruns etc. An absolute and unremitting pox on all those involved in this debacle, from the KiwiRail and consultant designers and project managers, right up to the Prime Minister, who should have intervened. We’ll now have many years of temporary terminal facilities and a final, compromised, terminal area layout. Plus smaller, inferior ferries, when and if they finally arrive, with doubtful cost savings.

      The woman @ 4.20 saying it's a crown responsibility hits the key point. Where's Sir Geoff when we need him? He oughta be pronouncing some kind of official verdict.

      The crown is being irresponsible not getting this job done. Bleating about the cost is irrelevant. This ancient waka symbolises human origins in Aotearoa. Mutuality of value and historical import cannot be denied.

      When the crown fails to fulfill its duty in constitutional law by not exercising responsible governance, people see it as incompetent. Not a good look.
