This is ‘non-political’ in the sense that it’s not controversial and not about any sort of party politics, it’s just a tale of – believe it or not – an actual workplace.

It’s an interesting read, because it’s in six parts – so the weekend, at least for people who aren’t working jobs during that time – is one of the few times people could get to read it.

It’s odd to think there are places like this in NZ, but there are.

It’s all a bit Victorian/Dickensian, except no child labour is involved and the work-week isn’t 70 hours. But the style of management and the whole running of the place is like another time, another place.

I keep plugging this guy – the wonderful Seth Lakeman. I wonder if anyone has gone and watched some of his vids. The stuff at the Minack in Cornwall is fantastic. Great music, stunning setting. I saw him one evening on a beach in Cornwall, on the outskirts of Newquay – excellent little gig. Him playing the tragic ‘Setting of the Sun’ as the sun set on the Celtic Sea behind us was a great moment.

Anyway, I’d be keen to read any others’ comments on him.

If a possum consumes 1080 how long before it karks it ? Rapid or slow ?

Given they can roam quite a distance from their home each night I’m wondering how plausible it is one makes it way into a residential setting from areas where 1080 may be laid.

    1. 3.1

It depends on how much the possum eats relative to its body weight, but generally it’s hours up to a day. It’s a pretty shitty way to die (compared to something like cynade which takes seconds). So yes, possums can move in that time, although I guess less so over time as they get sicker.

Authorities using 1080 in NZ have fairly wide buffers of no drop areas between the drop and places where there are a lot of people. I’d be surprised if 1080-ed possums made it to a town very often for instance (although the anti-lobby has its stories). But farm houses, sure. Farmers would be prewarned.

Gonna take my magnificent mutt for a long trot. Up hill down dale. That complete repose with the dynamic duo..Ms Ennui and cab sav.

I think they’re worth reading in sequence because they are self referential, although once you’ve read a few it doesn’t matter so much.

Can someone give an update of how their vege garden or fruit trees are doing? It is always nice to get a sense of the changing seasons from what people are doing in their gardens.

The blue-berrys have finished, the figs are ripening and pickable off the tree, the tamarillo are just starting to show a bit of colour, and the feijoas are slow, Kiwiri. This is in the mid-part of Northland.

Mmm … nice, Jenny Kirk. Sounds lovely and hoping I will have a place as well as time and discipline to organise a vege/fruit garden some day soon.

I have a very small back yard, about 6X 6 m. 2 apple trees apples ripe. Every tomato plant died. Only 1 gooseberry on bush.
Pumpkins have taken over the whole area. And I fear to walk through the mass of leaves and fruit. What will I do with a dozen pumpkins?
