The Dunedin protest

I haven’t seen many photos of the Dunedin anti GCSB Bill protest around, so here are a few of mine. Many excellent speakers, including Mayor Dave Cull and Dunedin South MP Clare Curran. Big cheers for Labour’s promise to dump this legislation.

500 people in the Octagon:

“1984 is not an instruction manual”
Brilliant and possibly trumps the very good “look in your own key-hole” from Dunedin.

Sorry, I don’t think so, “look in your own key-hole” is widely understood but “1984 is not an instruction manual” is generation specific you old b’stard!.

According to MSM, Wellington had about 500 people protesting, spread over 200m while on the march. At approximately ten abreast, the rows would have had to have been about four metres apart. 500? Yeah…. nah…. oh WTF. Not a bad turnout and certainly more than 500.

The MSM have always under-estimated protest numbers. Why? Because the vast majority of the protests have been during National governments. There is one exception – the odd manufactured protest against Labour governments. Remember the falsely termed anti-smacking protests? Top media billing throughout NZ and numbers regularly over-estimated. According to the MSM 5000 people attended a march up Queen St. It later transpired there were only around 500.

I quite liked the Tui-style placard: “You can trust us with your data. Yeah, right.” It was great to see such a mix of people, too.

I left after Curran’s speech – she was hitting the Party line of GCSB review pretty thoroughly; Clark MIA as per usual (though to be fair; Turei wasn’t there this time either). I too thought Cull did well, given that it was an unapproved protest with traffic trundling and honking past and he’s hardly a radical activist as Mayor. A more diverse turnout than the April anti-asset-sale protest which had more of an International Socialists/ Mana presence.

More people should have joined in the procession for Privacy’s coffin at the start though.
