It came after they cut government funding for Matariki events. And choice not to provide any money for Auckland to host the return of the Americas Cup.
Why?
Risible growth in the local economy and with an election year coming up.
The underlying factor is appropriate domestic incomes and spending policy, at the personal and government level.
A working economy.
This needs to be hammered hard. This isn't something new, it's reinstating something that National cut, and that cut has done damage. It's only when they realise that they are likely to loose significant votes in Auckland that they reverse their damage.
We'll probably see more of this as the election approaches, reinstate things they've cut, and then crow how great they are putting money into what people want.

Looks like the old "bread and circuses" approach.
Keep the plebs happy with entertainment, and maybe they won't notice the money (taxpayers' money of course) would have been better spent on more beds or another operating theatre in the Dunedin hospital.
