Chris Hipkins came up with a zinger yesterday calling Christopher Luxon and Nicolas Willis “Fisher and Paykel” because of the incredible amount of spin they produce.
The context was their post cabinet press conference where they spoke for 10 minutes listing all of the things they claimed they had done which were helping ease the cost of living crisis.
As pointed out by Hipkins the list was complete spin.
From the Herald:
Although the party said they were going to get “New Zealand back on track” as per their election campaign slogan, Hipkins claimed “across the board, New Zealanders can see the country is going backwards.”
“Yet Christopher Luxon and Nicola Willis just say – “oh, that’s all part of the plan, we’ve got this” – they haven’t got it.
“Things are getting worse for the vast majority of New Zealanders and no amount of spin from them is going to change the reality that things are getting worse for New Zealanders under their leadership.
“I think we should start calling them Fisher and Paykel because they’ve got more spin than a front load washing machine.”
Hipkins is right.
Luxon and Willis continue to blame Labour for cost of inflation pressures, despite it being a world wide phenomenon caused by Covid caused supply chain disruptions. And their claim to care about the plight of the poor and working people is difficult to justify. When you plan to increase the pay given to crown entity directors by up to 80% but only increase the minimum wage by a paltry 1.5% your class preferences are clear.
And it is very clear to me that Luxon gets armed with three talking points and a list and repeats these ad nauseum, displaying the uber confidence that only an underarm deoderant sales rep can display.
Willis is even worse. She is someone who talks as if she has a deep understanding of economic systems but has a degree in English Literature and a diploma in journalism. She has legendary skills at throwing words and insults around, but her real time understanding about how the economy works is more doubtful. This is especially evident now that things are not working out as had been promised.
They really are a party of spin. Fisher and Paykel should see if they can patent some of National’s more outlandish spin cycles.
Its all a Simple Image………
Yep, then there's this.

Love this. Yesterday's Post Cab press conf was embarrassing to say the least. What made the day for me was Luxon getting booed at the Netball.
I was going to make a similar comment.
Luxon must realise that him and Willis getting NZ back on track and all those great things they've done for the bottom 90% is probably why they booed him at the netball.
Re: Hipkins' comment. Point taken but it's a bit demeaning to the memory of Woolf Fisher and Maurice Paykel…
Better to describe Willis as a Botch washing machine and Luxon the soap that washes the economy whiter.
F&P started out as a good old paternalistic NZ company, great cafeteria in Auckland, but ended up embracing union busting “team working”, and the whiteware division ditched the regions and headed to Mexico.
After that happened, Obtrectatrix and I became so unimpressed with their products, we took to calling them Fizzle and Pikeout.
What did you think, and say, when Jacinda Ardern was booed? Was that a day-making cause of hilarity for you?
when was that?
Alwyn can confirm whether he was referring to this:
Twenty years ago when she was a new MP. I'll take that as alwyn telling porkies.
(the bit about her family booing her makes me think this is classic Ardern anecdote).
In August 2019 Jacinda was booed at Eden Park when handing over the Bledisloe Cup.
In November 2021 Jacinda was heckled by individuals in the audience during a Covid vaccine rollout press conference in Northland.
This from the Guardian………….

NZ retain the Bledisloe Cup for a 17th time!
Not too many have left the stadium, as Kieran Read strides forward to receive a 17th consecutive Bledisloe Cup on behalf of the All Blacks.
A handshake from NZ Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern. Is she the only politician in world sport not to get booed? Or is that just an Australian tradition.
Kieran Read holds it aloft – Old Jug Ears – and the crowd roar their approval.
This from Newshub………
Social media has erupted in debate after Jacinda Ardern was seemingly booed at during the All Blacks v Wallabies Test at Eden Park.
As Paul Simon sang…….
"A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest……."

The point is any and every PM is going to have up to half the population loathe them. And a portion of those people will be the type of moron that boos. John Key had it, Jacinda had it and now Luxon is getting it. For some people like Darien, that makes their day….
As the announcer called for the Prime Minister to hand the Bledisloe Cup to captain Kieran Read, there was a noticeably loud amount of booing from the crowd.
Has to be all those unhappy Wallabies supporters ……………
We were without the Internet all day so I have just seen this.
Is the response from MJR sufficient evidence or do you want me to provide other quotes? Unfortunately they did happen. I regarded her as a poor PM but I would have commented on her failings at that, not booed her when she was making appearances that were simply part of her job. The same holds for Luxon and every other PM in my opinion. It does not make my day to see any of them being booed.
They are greedy beyond belief and have doubled down on their failed ideas (austerity again) and they are responsible for increasing wealth for the top 5%, but extreme poverty for the strugglers without homes.
Willie Nelson's song "Vote 'em out". You tube, comes to mind. Make it your ring tone !!!
Imagine if the media actually asked them some direct questions and interrupted their scripted word salad spin fest.
Then you'd see how clueless they really are off script which is what the swinging voters need to see.
But that's not going to happen as they've got the media poodles on the their owners short leashes ready to be yanked in case actual journalism breaks out.
Right now most New Zealanders are miserable.
There's no spin out of it.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon: “I hope there will be good common sense, that’s what this government is about”.

Its like living in a Monty Python skit…………
So should this be their new campaign song?
This could be the result with voters next election……..
Ha ha! Very good, Kat.
Liam Dawson and Joe Root more like. 66 overs of spin and not a wicket between them……. England versus India.
If the fantasy world of Christopher Wonka and his oompaloompas amazes you, try this mornings headline from Shane "I interviewed myself" Jones…
Last-minute change puts oil and gas cleanup decisions in ministers' hands https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/568388/last-minute-change-puts-oil-and-gas-cleanup-decisions-in-ministers-hands
Tough competition amongst industries to see who can claim the bigger slice of Jones and co.
Is it fishing, fossil fuels, mining…. oh so much to choose from with Shane it seems.
