Their Mayor is a National Party clown show. He is about as informed as a Fox News anchor – he played his part in ending European interest in offshore wind farms off the Taranaki coast. No power, no industry.
A relic of the past century.
Labour is struggling to know what to do, to hold the Party together from the last century, keep faith with promises and legal treaties made to enable trade, and keep the citizens on side. When Labour does act wisely the Opposition Right queers their pitch. The social climbers of NZAO like to believe they are great and right and Labour just lagging behind. The easy money comes from loosening controls to overseas or moneyed interests, less regulation, less taxes. If there was change the citizens would need to give some band-aids to the 'wounded'.
But to make the change we need would require pulling together accepting a period of financial difficulty. If we learned the reasons for, and acknowledged our present one, it could give us the strength to change modes which will have consequences. Would enough citizens especially the younger, come forward to the challenge and learn about the problems? Hipkins cannot tell them, Labour as a whole can't move from The Third Way trap.
We must understand the goodwill that flows from the Treaty of Waitangi. The casual racism has been there for ages and would be tolerated if it didn't undermine respect for Maori particularly, as partners under the Treaty of Waitangi. That should have been a base for building a healthy intelligent relationship.
The class system got fudged but is showing up again, with the quest for money and assets being an addiction, a drug. JM Barrie wrote about the snooty set in The Admirable Crichton in 1902. People need to be accepted as part of a community with different levels of attainment all worthy. . Some of those considering themselves upper class know little about caring for others even their children – boarding schools etc. and the competitive life, attainment is all. Or superiority in their children through sporting prowess ignoring other gifts.
If we don't mature and acquire some humility and humane values, amongst people seeking to be leaders; recognise those with the strength of character and wisdom to manage us through what we are now, in an upward and forward manner, we are doomed. Present attitudes and conservative education by male and female upstarts drenched in pseudo religion, competitive demands and respectability, will help that along.
But Maori choosing wise leadership with similar from Pakeha, and of the different cultures now seething away in NZAO could work together not factions pulling each other apart as in our present system, so wasteful in money; time is short with multiple resource, climate, political, emergency events besetting us.
Start right now with the eager young school leavers giving them a chance to form working and thinking groups and give them practice, carrying out low-cost initiatives after consulting with communities for what they want that can be provided for best advantage to the budget allowed, provide funds, office administration and oversight within the budget (not as with present Councils). They would discuss, report advise and be advised, by able community people acting as mentors providing oversight. This could be our last election of this type, and we use the next three years as training for the young strivers to the future so they follow a visible, new and practical path.
