    Once again Chlöe Swarbrick advocates for renters who will suffer due to the extension of the Healthy Homes Standard:

    Green Party spokeswoman for renters Chlöe Swarbrick said with over 60 per cent of the rental market covered by private landlords – not property managers – renters had been “left out in the cold”.

    “We’ve heard time and again that some of the most egregious breaches of renters’ rights come from landlords who are not up to scratch on the law.

    “A universal register is something any good actor in the sector should want.”

    The Government is not collecting data on how many rentals are compliant with its Healthy Homes standards. It also does not require third parties to assess if properties meet the standards or the exclusion criteria.

    The Green Party has been advocating for a Warrant of Fitness to ensure rental homes were meeting standards and a register of landlords and property managers.

    While New Zealand is adding religion to its hate speech law (currently covers race, ethnicity and origin) Russia is also toughening up its similar legislation.

    Russia's lower house of parliament has unanimously voted to extend its ban on so-called gay propaganda

    Under the latest version of the law, any promotion of homosexuality – including in books, films and online – is illegal and carries heavy penalties.

    It was approved by 397 votes to none in the Duma – Russias lower house – with no abstentions.

    The original version of the controversial gay propaganda; law was adopted in 2013, banning propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations – depictions of same sex-relationships – among children. It categorises any positive depictions of same-sex relationships in mass media or advertising under the same umbrella as distributing pornography, the promotion of violence, or stoking racial, ethnic and religious tensions.

    Advertising, books and films with positive presentations of LGBT people will be banned – raising concerns from publishers who have warned that it could affect classics of Russian literature.

    Any discussions online about LGBT topics can be blocked and the sale of goods with LGBT slogans or symbols would also be prohibited.

    Human rights campaigners and LGBT groups have said the extension means that any act or public mention of the LGBT community is being criminalised.

    “Tsar Putin” is playing to the long held notion that the Russian Orthodox Church recognises the leader of the Russian state as the head of eastern Roman empire (Vladimir, Grand Duke of Kiev baptised his followers before marrying the daughter of the Byzantine Emperor).

    Vladimir Putin has made anti-gay rhetoric the cornerstone of his political agenda.

    In a recent speech, he accused the West of moving towards open Satanism, citing the promotion of gay and transgender rights in Europe as an example.

    Given Nationals own refusal to remove the blasphemy law (still there when they left office in 2017), they might now support Labour’s “threat to free speech”, or at the very least stop talking about the issue and retain the legislation intact when in government***. And instead provide a “1975 like” laser focus on the white majority fear of loss of democracy because John Keys government signed New Zealand up to recognition of indigenous peoples rights at the UN (but National seems opposed to domestic action related to this). In this they will be aided by the champions of assimilation Winston Peters ” Apirana the egalitarian” and David Seymour “Maui of the elite school zone”.

    Laws against hate speech will be our greatest opportunity yet. Many
    conservatives in Britain, Canada, and Europe refused to take advantage of these laws out of misplaced moral outrage. We’ve seen their mistake and we don’t need to repeat it here. If the progressives want a war, let’s give them hell.

    Those who promote anti-Christian or anti-conservative bigotry and hatred will soon be able to be prosecuted with possible penalties of up to three years in jail.

      I found that Baker is in her late 20s. Apparently 16 year olds can't have a vote because they're too dumb and their brains haven't developed. Baker not only gets to vote but she vigorously tries to affect how others vote.

    I am in Oban in the far north of Scotland at the moment.

    The relevance to TS is that I listened live to BBC Radio 4 at 8am local time this morning where the (Irish accented) leader of the nurses union in the UK put up a brilliant defence as to why the nurses over here are striking for better pay and conditions next month. The parallels with NZ are striking. Basically she explained it was the fault of Tory government neglect of the NHS.

    Well worth a listen on BBC Sounds, easily found online.
