Stunning nature

Drilling for oil we shouldn’t use, in a place that should remain untouched. Is this really what NZ wants?

Government misled families about Pike River

TV3 has released video confirming that the atmosphere in the Pike River Mine was inert and raising major doubts about the claim that the mine was too unsafe to extract the bodies or to investigate the causes.

Climate change pedal to the metal

Avoiding 2 deg C warming is a ship that’s sailed. Global warming is now happening at about 4.3x the previous long-run rate. And it might go up to 18x the previous rate over the next few years. That’s what the pundits call “abrupt climate change.”

TiSA reduces COP21 to a charade

That National Ltd™ is currently in the process of giving away New Zealand’s sovereignty in areas such as energy resources and related regulations, explains its contempt for the environment and the talking down of expectations regarding climate change.

The Continuing Fight for Justice at Pike River

Yesterday the families lost only a small bit of the battle for justice at Pike in an application to get some of the documentation on the Peter Whittall decision. It is clear from the decision that the process of filing itself caused MBIE to agree to release a number of the key documents.

Local Bodies: “Government Given the Bums Up”

From the Local Bodies blog, 2 posts on the government’s “head in the sand” approach to climate change and the environment.  A critique of the government’s approach to business, mining and the environment & a report on the protest against the government’s head in the sand approach.

Green Party election priorities launch

Today the Green Party launched the first of it’s election priorities in Hamilton at 11. 00 am.  The focus is on building a cleaner, fairer, smarter New Zealand.  The Internet Party is onboard with a new environment policy.  There are differences between these 2 parties and Labour on oil and gas exploration.  Equality continues to be a key priority for the Green Party. Local Bodies: National’s Campaign Strategy Stinks

We all know from reading Nicky Hager’s The Hollow Men (or watching the documentary) that the National Party actually advocates for a small section of society. Their policies rarely support most New Zealanders and after each period of a National led Government we have costly messes like leaky buildings and dead miners as the aftermath. This isn’t to say that Labour shouldn’t take responsibility for not repealing dodgy legislation, but National has always stood for less regulation, fewer protections for workers and the environment and an upward flow of money to the already rich.

NRT: MBIE doesn’t care about conservation

No Right Turn turns his attention back to the hapless ministerial fool , Simon Bridges. It turns out that when he approved oil exploration in our biggest forest park without realising that he had, it was also what his advice had been. MoBIE simply didn’t consider if the oil exploration and presumably the eventual exploitation would conflict with something as economically vital as tourism. In fact, they appear to have ignored all other claims and uses of the land.

Environment on the edge

On Al Jazeera NewsHour this morning, there were two reports on environmental issues in different parts of the planet: stories of the tension between pursuit of economic “growth” and the destruction of the environment. In both countries, there are attempts to develop renewables, without changing the whole system.

NRT: Is the Minister of Energy a muppet?

When looking at Simon Bridges – a purported government minister. You have to remember that he is damn sloppy even for a politician. But oh so typical of his usual muppet behaviour is that he wasn’t aware that he was opening up our biggest forest park for oil and gas exploration. Of course it could just be National’s bulldoze anything for a little immediate profit….

Drill baby drill

Two days after the IPCC has warned us of the threat posed by climate change and Simon Bridges has announced a huge block offer of parts of New Zealand and much of its territorial water.  This will include the pristine waters off Auckland’s west coast, home of Maui’s dolphin.  In a world that has to address its consumption of petroleum you have to question if it is worth the risk.
