Bomber, Tumeke and the next step…

Bomber Bradbury today steals The Pope’s limelight by announcing that he is stepping down from Tumeke. But fear not Lefties – it’s for a good cause…

Why I’m stepping down from Tumeke – what I have in common with the Pope today

Dear blogging whanau.

I never thought I’d ever have much in common with the Pope, but today is also the day that I am announcing that this will be my final month at Tumeke. …

I’ve decided to step down at the end of the month because of an incident that occurred last year.

It was the Labour Party Conference. Watching the mainstream media manufacture a leadership coup because they were personally surprised by the shock of members and unions wanting to make the Party more democratic astounded me.

It made me realize how small and narrow the focus of the mainstream media really was. The manufactured crisis at the Hobbit, the Titewhai fetish at Waitangi, and the ease with which media are turned into a vehicle for Government spin rather than critics of Government spin are all to me, examples of what happens when we have so few avenues for a counter perspective.

As Seven Sharp becomes the new dumbed down bench mark for critical public debate, I’m determined to put together a counter weight to that narrative and start to not only challenge it, but to begin amplifying the arguments needed for us to find the solutions to 270 000 kids in poverty, a real unemployment rate in double figures and the highest rate of inequality we’ve ever had.

We need an economic debate, a social debate and a cultural debate that has no fear of slaughtering New Zealand’s right wing sacred cows. Sadly we have a news media and hard right blogosphere that only seems to want to feed, water and maintain those sacred cows.

On March 1st I’m launching something new, consider it my media blow for a more egalitarian New Zealand. That announcement will be made next week on Tumeke. …

I’m very excited with what I am about to launch. Beware the ideas of March.

Why not head on over to Tumeke and wish Bomber well…

I can’t comment at Tumeke because I don’t belong to any of the comment clubs it is set to, so my thoughts here in case Bomber turns up…

I’ll miss your writing at Tumeke, but look forward to what comes next and hope I can support it in some way. It’s exciting to see a new initiative on the horizon. All the best.

The loneliness of the long distance columnist, go Bomber! Jim Moro Bar still does not want you back by the way.

      1. 4.1.1

Heh, go Git I email him too now and then. Don’t buy the “bombastic” line given all the soft gutted middle classers they have on RNZ panel. Jim gets rather defensive, “no I won’t have him back”–what is with the “I”.

I still hope that Bernard Hickey’s idea for a journalism.org.nz enterprise can get off the ground at some stage. Good on ya Bomber.

    1. 6.2

Journalism.org is a good example of why capitalism doesn’t bring about the dynamism that its supporters believe it does. In fact, as this example shows, it actually brings about the opposite as the vast majority of people just don’t have the wherewithal to be dynamic as the majority of the wealth is tied up by the few rich pricks.

btw, good on ya Bomber, (I also do not comment on other blogs, ‘cept The Jackal, because of the Ridiculous formatting, lets follow the commentors and see what else they get up to, ALSO Frankly Speaking, is EXCELLENT writing / compilation and wotta bout that Guy? hmmm, pretty clever imo) . Now how about the tangata whenua and the tradition of koha; my neighbour Gave, yes Gave, me a tele and freeview box so that I can laugh hilariously at the politics in this country, particularly at Reinhard Dick Carter’s attempt at ignoring our world renown Indonesian activist friend. wotta Dick!

Stealing the Popes limelight???? Can’t wait to see the head lines, “Bomber posts on The Standard – Vatican panics!”

  6. 10

Really? Who cares. The guy is a ranting, lying nobody who is completely unable to brook any criticism, no matter how well founded.

An egoist of the highest order

Do I sense some jealousy there TheConformist, and what ever happened to your blog? I can’t find it on google anywhere… Consigned to the digital dustbin I guess.

      1. 10.2.1

Indeed, I attempted blogging but mothballed it. Haven’t posted for nearly a year – tried and gave up when I realised I was never gonna write enough to keep it fresh.

But jealous of Bomber? Please – the guy is liar and screeching, shit flinging, orangutan. Why be jealous of someone who can’t write for shit when I could be jealous of Hunter Thompson, Fareed Zakaria or Bill Bryson.

You know, writers who have the respect of their peers and have actually done things.

Plenty of ground for pragmatic centrism which makes sense, in this country. The ground that NZ First and United are supposed to occupy but completely fail to because they believe that centrism is taking some stuff from the Left, some stuff from the Right, and making an un-intelligible, philosophically incoherant miss-mash of it, as they pander towards who can give them the baubles of power.

              1. 10.2.1.1.1.1.1

I do aim for pragmatic centrism and I agree with you when it comes to NZF and United.
                Centrism/moderate =/= half left/half right.

I have actually done a bit of reading on Seddon and Ballance in recent weeks.
Both interesting characters in their own rights.

                    I liked Seddon’s style I must admit.

Thanks for your work Bomber. I’ve followed your blog for ages and always found it to be a valuable and interesting part of the wider NZ media. Nobody in the ‘sphere has worked harder than you to fight the movement against democracy and towards a police-state. I expect that work has made life difficult for you in some ways

I never did figure out how to comment at your place, so I’ve had to cheer you on silently.

I’m looking forward to your new venture.

Onya Bomber. The degree of ship-scared vitriol from the tools of Money tells me you’re onto it with a vengeance. Look after yourself brother, a kiwi John Stewart is what they fear the most, and cornered rats will bite….

      1. 15.1.2

“He’s a guy that gives a much needed serve to the blue bellies, bureaucrats and bloody Hobbit lovers.”

        Really?

I thought he was that shrill lying blogger who users polemics, hyperbole and unfunny metaphors to attack those he personally disagree with in order to hide the anger he feels about being left behind when his university mates grew up – leaving him alone in a world of adults who don’t take him seriously.

        1. 15.1.2.1

          Ouch…..did he steal your sweetheart,

You should watch Citizen A, he’s “grown up” and very relevant, as are the guests.

          1. 15.1.2.1.1

I have occasionally attempted to watch Citizen A but his voice is almost too much to bear.

And no – he isn’t relevant. Relevant would imply more than a handful of views on Youtube as well as better guests from all walks of political life. Not to mention he is painfully unfunny.

            1. 15.1.2.1.1.1

              “And no – he isn’t relevant. “
              Not to you.
Critique of Government behaviour and policies is a very relevant part of the democratic process, as is informing the public of the ramifications of such. Bomber provides this service.

            2. 15.1.2.1.1.2

He is quite ‘shouty’. He does have egotistical pictures of himself as his set background. He does have an annoying way of saying ‘yea’ in a harsh sounding manner when one of his guests is talking.

              But….

He has really solid content and guests and he often says things that don’t ever get said on the tele anywhere else and sometimes he’s rather insightful. I hope he does well with his next project.

              1. 15.1.2.1.1.2.1

” he often says things that don’t ever get said on the tele [or] anywhere else”

Yeah because it is complete crap and sounds like a angsty teenager wrote/said it.

Why not head on over to Tumeke and wish Bomber well…

Because he is a childish attention-seeker.

Bomber Bradbury steals the Pope's limelight?!?!?!

Excuse me while I have a fit of hysteric laughing.

I mean, this blog makes ridiculous, hyperbolic statements daily, probably hourly. But that is tops. Just so funny.

  11. 24

Bomber as a colourful turn of phrase, and makes left wing politics interesting.

I always enjoy his TV shows, which usually have a really good bunch of guests.

Will be interested to see what he does next.

  12. 26

I’ll sure miss you on Tumeke, Bomber. Can’t wait to see what you’re doing next! Thanks for your work so far! 🙂
