Can’t go for a ride this weekend because of the inclement weather so it’s looking like DVD’s round the fireplace. Any recommendations ?

Four Lions! Brilliant satire from the Armando Iannucci. The Dragon Tattoo series will usefully fill in a few hours, too.

Never mind DVDs – on the web, watch short films made by amateur groups right here in NZ!

One weekend – 48 hours to make a movie. Friday evening at 7pm you get given your genre, (mystery, road movie, whatever) and some other details like a specified character, prop, and camera technique. You hand in your film Sunday 7pm. Hundreds of groups do it all round the country. And some of the films made are insanely good.

Check out several years of national finalists right here.

Will watch that in the weekend PW.

Edit: That was fn brilliant! One of the best 48’s I’ve ever seen. Congratulations to you and your team. Folks, if you want a fun 6 minutes, watch PW’s film. An remember, start to finish, plot to print, it was all done in one weekend.

I’ll be playing Duke Nukem Foirever, doing the ironing and starting series 2 of The Virginian.

Just finished watching series one of Misfits which contrasts with Heroes quite nicely though note some are likely to be offended by it.

Both the UK and American series of Life On Mars are worth watching.

Hard to pick films without knowing what people are interested in but a few old films I re-watch now and then are Turk 182 (Timothy Hutton and Robert Urich), Death Rides A Horse, It’s A Wonderful Life, Play Misty For Me, Ronin, The Hustler or The King Of Kong.

Something more recent and I think better than The Expendables was Red.

The original Live Aid concert continues to look and sound great with Freddy Mercury the stand out performer at his peak.

I might just be showing my age in these choices though.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS & SUPPORTS: Initial installations required (included with the game) are Microsoft DirectX, Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (ATL), Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable, and AMD Dual Core Optimizer. (AMD optimizer required only for specific AMD processors to run the game correctly, but installs for all of them.)

WinXP and fairly minimal specs so, maybe. Although, the redistributables may be a problem.

Might get it once a good sale comes on Steam. Which probably means its a few months away.

Oh and I think the game will look and run much better if you can exceed those rather minimal specs, particularly in terms of RAM, CPU and video card 😉

“the game will look and run much better”

It’s a moot point. It’s not up to modern graphics and game-play – but you should only be disappointed if you expected that in the first place.

Buy it for the nostalgia but not necessarily for the gaming experience.

I’m working my way through all the series of ‘The Wire‘. Never saw it on tv (cos I don’t have one).

Now I understand all these ‘in’ references to ‘back in the day’.

I also think I’ll add ‘Most def’ to my vocabulary even though it wouldn’t sound particularly cool coming from me.

Yeah am just starting series 4 …… very compelling , this time they drag education into the mix

Must be the best production to come out of the US in along time .

And I’ve been told that the fifth series deals with the media … Should be good (but if I say any more I’ll start to bring politics into this thread!).

I’m just really impressed with the writing, dramatic intelligence and characterisation. You think you’ve got some character ‘taped’ – and then you don’t.

Great choice Puddle. A friend and I watched all series back-to-back last year and then The Corner. Best series ever. Most def.

I am going to see the Yale Whiffenpoofs at the Northern Club conscious as I do so that I am reinforcing class stereotypes (or would be if I wasn’t myself such a frightful oink).

    Raining here too.

An old muso mate sent me a you-tube link- “Sad Old bastards with Guitars.” Yes!

Had a walk around Lyttelton. Depressing. all the old buildings either bulldozed or in the process.

Good signs of life and get up and go from locals though. 2 coffee shops, bookshop and the bakery back operating already.

    Good luck.

Yes, there’s signs of life. I lived in Lyttelton for six and a half years (left late 2002) – now ‘over the hill’, back in Christchurch. There’s one or two good signs this side of the hill too. Addington Coffee Coop never missed a beat and now they’ve housed a grocers under their verandah out the front.

Those grocers had just opened a shop in the Selwyn Street shops (mostly demolished now) a few weeks before the September quake (I think). A real local, family business, unbelievably generous, helpful and determined to treat all their customers well. Good to see they found a local place to sell their produce since February.
