Should Kiwis dream of Electric Sheep?

Electricity and Data Centres are a major problem and opportunity for New Zealand. 

Power-hungry datacentres are popping up all over New Zealand. There’s 50 of them already, many developed quite close to each other. This is the primary way that the huge surge in global investment in hyperscale and AI-focused investment is impacting upon New Zealand. 

For investors there is now a huge premium put on locational safety and cheap large scale electricity with broadband that isn’t going to be interfered with. 

One of New Zealand’s largest investment companies, Infratil, has made a large play towards building and operating data centres. It now holds a 49.7% stake in CDC Datacentres, which is the largest privately owned and operated datacentre provider  across Australia and New Zealand. This is driven by massive AI and cloud computing demand, and for those who track their share price you will have seen that this has become the largest and fastest-growing part of Infratil’s portfolio. 

That’s one big operator but there’s more.

New Zealand’s data center market consists of over 50 operational facilities, primarily driven by regional colocation and a growing wave of hyperscale and AI-focused infrastructure. Auckland remains the primary hub, while massive AI facilities are expanding into Southland. 

There are a bunch of smaller ones as well across the country.

For good security reasons their locations aren’t well publicised, but these big power-hungry facilities are now found already with CDC in Silverdale and Hobsonville in Auckland, Datacom in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Christchurch. Then there’s Microsoft in Hobsonville and Millwater, other smaller ones, and then there’s the big one by DataGrid north of Invercargill which relies on a 15-year clean energy agreement with Mercury. 

New Zealand’s electricity consumption currently sits around 40 TWh a year, so attracting even a small fraction of the global investment in AI computing will create a material increase in demand. This growth couldn’t come at a better time for an industry where demand has been stagnant for over 12 years, which has all but obliterated commitment to generation development. On top of this, much of our skilled workforce who were involved in the days of steady build-out are now approaching retirement and, without careful planning, will leave behind a critical skills gap in the industry.

Obviously, the shortage of solid electricity generation investment over more than a decade is choking New Zealand’s households and heavy industry to death. 

The short term economic impact is strong and well paid, with for example 1,200 skilled construction jobs planned for the Datagrid AI factory south of Nighcaps. And the knock-on is that the scale of power use is so high that there will also be major construction jobs in energy production. But the downside is that there are few long term jobs created from these facilities. 

While the buildings themselves don’t require many daily workers, they are significant drivers of broader employment. They stimulate work for renewable energy providers, telecommunications, transmission infrastructure, and specialized cloud or cybersecurity contractors. Not all datacentre employment is equal to other employment.

This is a major and growing industry that encourages growth in energy production, makes use of New Zealand’s premium of global safety and security, and assists our growing gaming and broader digital industries beyond Auckland and into the regions. 

There’s no doubt New Zealand is a candidate to be a big beneficiary of datacentre investment at scale.

It has local proponents, of course.

For me, a benchmark of future economic success will be when our economy needs to manipulate and kill animals and wreck our water less, and a lot more of the world demanding more of our sustainable electricity commoditised into priced AI management.

    This is timely, and everything is happening so fast we can't keep up. 50 already?

    Roger Douglas was told to do things fast before people could get their sh.t together and ban negative changes. So it goes…or does it? How do we preserve our humanity and essential living conditions against these MODs (Mechanical Organic Doppelgangers)?

    there is nothing remotely sustainable about this. Good on the Invers one getting a renewable energy deal, which is a nod in the right direction. But none of the core costs are factored in, especially the climate and biodiversity crises.

    Capitalism is greedy as fuck and is hitting the limits of growth all over the place. That we are building data centres when we can't even run our own domestic electricity supply and network tells us everything about the thinking.

    Not just new data centres in our back yard but wind farms, minerals mining, and more and more development. None of it accounts for the planetary boundaries of ecology or people.

    I have no doubt Ad that you are right, there is some kind of a quid pro quo here that might favour our economy. But there's no economy without ecology and ecological systems are already very strained.

      AI creates a huge increase in demand for power.

      This could have been regulated to reduce the impact – but instead we have imperial government catering to this new estate of power.

      The irony AI is the interface between oligarchy and unaccountable government, called technocracy.

      Where capital owns and runs more of the economy.

      Wind farms are a good balance to solar and part of the transition away from carbon, that transition without some regulation of growth is ultimately problematic.

        The Coalition sees regulation as a hindrance & handbrake and it insists on regulating after rather than before an event, i.e., let’s cross the bridge when it is collapsing or already has. Efficient this is not, in the longer run. Governments should treat the country and its people with the care & attention of a doctor – prevention is better than cure and first do no harm.

    In other words, our so-called renewable & sustainable electricity is yet another high-volume low-value commodity and primary product to be sold overseas. The only difference is that the transformation to high(er)-value end-product takes place on NZ soil, this time. Are those purported infrastructure investments extending to urban-residential users and will they pay the price or a large fraction of it?

    Because the Coalition has no plan for economic growth and because it’s desperate for overseas capital investment here, it will sell out the country and the people who live here.

    Are we going to limit the extent to our own domestic level of data use and extra export purpose use?

    Surely the local infrastructure work created adds cost to existing customers?

    Why should New Zealand subsidise foreign data centre users?

    If it results in higher power prices we will lose more business than we gain.

      Arguments around absolute sovereignty of data infrastructure are somewhat constrained by the highly decentralised and globally interconnected nature of the modern internet, particularly given that large portions of New Zealand’s digital infrastructure and data are already hosted overseas.

      In many cases this is not even a deliberate choice so much as a practical constraint of the modern cloud ecosystem.

      As a data engineer, my realistic platform options are effectively Azure, AWS, or a third-party platform. Which itself will run on Azure or AWS infrastructure if we dig deep enough.

      In my current role we are primarily an Azure shop, and while Microsoft does now operate New Zealand-hosted infrastructure, not all Azure services are available locally. Some workloads and services still need to run from Australian regions simply because there is no equivalent NZ-hosted offering yet.

      To some extent, that is simply the trade-off for participating in the modern digital economy. There are genuine sovereignty and resilience concerns worth discussing, but the underlying infrastructure ecosystem is already too deeply globalised to be realistically unwound.

      At that point, the more practical question becomes how we manage and shape that investment responsibly. If New Zealand is going to host more data infrastructure, then we should be ensuring those facilities operate with as little environmental impact as possible while leveraging that investment to support a more efficient, resilient, and lower-carbon electricity system overall.

      From where I sit in an electricity distributor, it is also something the sector is already putting a significant amount of thought and effort into. Much of the current discussion around grid modernisation, renewable generation, demand flexibility, and large industrial loads is increasingly shaped by the expectation that AI, cloud computing, and datacentre demand will become a meaningful part of New Zealand’s future electricity landscape.

    Seeing as were doing thought exercises. Why should not power/energy be used for people and their need to survive this heavy weather we got coming down the pipe line rather than some AI porn dream?

    And is it not getting tired the people offering the solutions, like AI, are the same people who have accumulated vast amounts of wealth already.?

    Leaving aside the fact we live in a system controlled by sociopaths who when they get board, fuck children, and start wars.

    Data centers are a great idea, just like dairy farming was a great idea. That said, least the dairy farmers were not about undermining humanity and destroying our ability through democracy and freedom to uplift the poor.

    Mind you what did the pope say about AI again?

    We need to distinguish between data centres and the AI factory.

    Datagrid in Southland is the latter, which is why it has its own energy arrangement.

    A knowledgeable speaker came to talk to my class. he said that every time a new power station is announced we're wrong to think prices will come down… cos every time a new one is announced the power from it is already sold.
