The video above shows that as an Auckland City Councillor, Paul Goldsmith had pushed hard to criminalise rough sleeping and beggars 18 years ago.

There were approximately 100 homeless people in Auckland back then.

He succeeded this year with Auckland business lobby group leader Viv Beck shining brightly by his side.

This week, Auckland City Councillors also revealed National reduced social housing accommodation:

“from 890 places to 39 in one year, and cut emergency housing grants by 70-80% ($20m). Since then, individuals rough sleeping in Auckland increased by 100%”.

Perhaps the situation is best described by those Aucklanders sitting in Aotea Square 18 years ago. When asked about then Councillor Goldsmith’s proposal, they said:

“Unless you’re going to provide a viable alternative for him to stay or to go, it’s absolutely pointless”.

And:

“Probably not a kind response.

If you’re looking to deal with the problem, you’re better off addressing the underlying problem, not just simply trying to shuffle it out of sight.”

This week, the Government announced it is effectively criminalising homeless, beggars etc even though laws already exist to address genuine disorder and crime.

How New Zealand has changed.

Goldsmith is a living example of if you stick around long enough in National, have the right atitude and do as you're told then the baubles of office can still be yours.

Melissa Lee is another that springs to mind. Cameron Brewer is lurking also from the John Banks hatchery.

Brian Eno musician par excellence UK – on how Rich we need to be before we can afford to give up a bit for others. 7.17m Peeps blog

'If they want to leave the UK, then… off' This week we met the musician and record producer Brian Eno who told us that super rich people should be happy to pay a bit more tax to make sure many, many more people aren't struggling in poverty. He dismisses the idea that some might leave the country if the government brought in a wealth tax and said most would not even notice it. Mean rich people think more about numbers on a bank balance rather than how they could use it, he suggests. The Roxy Music co-founder is part of the Patriotic Millionaires group – high profile rich people in support of an extra super tax rich.. Do you agree? Look out for our upcoming film on the Patriotic Millionaires event on Peeps very soon.

Goldsmith should get to work and do his smithy job making gold and help others with it. The lean little man seems terribly self-contained!

Two particular words from Bernie Sanders speech above; 'deceptive practices' which is a very telling term to remember, to explain to others less clued up than people here, about why it is so hard to move away from the maelstrom of murkiness we experience. It seems ongoing despite praiseworthy efforts down the decades by people who understand the analogy of Hans C Anderson's 'Emperor's New Clothes'. It requires thought, clear-eyed appraisal, personal time and effort and willingness to give up repeating old saws that have failed to cut through the tripe. We must sharpen our minds.

Great guy Goldie unless you are a person of colour or a member of the lower socio-economic groups. Another ideologically driven academic who hasn't done a hard day's work in his life. Does not live in the real world.
