      Kinda typical Tory thinking.
Why not more holidays for workers/parents or, heaven forbid, raise wages so a household can function on one income?

    2. 1.3

Was wondering today how the kids will get on back at school next week.

No air con, sure they have wall to floor bifolds on most of the class rooms but dang.

On the other hand, am looking forward to being back at work in a couple of weeks, because there is air con.

Maybe Willis is just an air con chaser…..or just a ‘conner’ chasing ‘air’.

Here’s an idea… how about an extra week of paid leave instead…..

      1. 1.3.1

Hell no Cinny, Gnats don’t give stuff, they take it away. Little snips like fewer school journals, Creating a junior wage by lowering the existing one, taking away tea breaks. They are one big take away… LOL LOL

        1. 1.3.1.2

“This year I’ll be working on a Private Member’s Bill to get the conversation started.”

Sounds more like she wants a law change without the conversation. Cart before the horse.

She then talks about the importance of “kids spending the entire school holidays rambling in the bush, making forts and playing with friends. Children are enriched by these experiences and families are strengthened by time together. Goodness knows teachers need a break”, followed by a ‘but you can’t have this’, because people need to “get real”.

What a disingenuous piece of work she is.

      1. 1.4.1

Jesus how about lifting wages lowering housing costs .
Getting student teachers and uni students to offset their loans buy doing holidays programm.
But na nat mps are to stupid to think beyond taking more quality of life stuff away.

        1. 1.4.1.1

Holiday programs – good idea. Work in with hard-working or struggling parents trying to get ahead. A friendly society not a poncey one with people driving by sitting in a garden shed on wheels uninterested in being in a community.

      1. 1.5.1

Oh I can get much ruder nat boy . The last decent man in your outfit was bolger who it appears is trying to fix the harm he did.

      2. 1.5.2

Something just for you @ Wayne to ease the pain:

Where do some of these people get their values from I wonder?
If I had my way, I’d put bwaghorn in the army just to show him some discipline!

        (/sarc)

      3. 1.5.3

After sleeping on it you are right I apologize and will endeavor to lift my game .
Play ball and not the man(or woman in Willis ‘s case .still it would be nice if the national party weren’t so willing to accept the decline in living standards in this country so meekly.

    3. 1.7

      Typical scum labour supporter response.

      Your rankings sound unhinged.

At least try to make a rational response.

        1. 1.7.1.1

You might see that this was a reply to a statement calling others scum. Of course I don’t see you having issue with that.

Hypocrisy runs deep in you Marty.

And nope. Just hot and the dog wanted to go out.

    1. 2.1

There will be a difference between “a Green New Deal” of Kamala Harris and “The Green New Deal” of Ocasio-Cortez.
I reckon Senator Harris could get the nomination and beat Trump. She has all the right credentials; senator from a big state, right age, great public service record, speaks well, and is generally appealing.

The relentless taunting of these people—the mobs sneer “gypsies” at them—is a nasty throwback to the way Pakeha NZers’ ancestors treated Roma and Jews and Africans and the Irish in the 19th century.

A woman from the Herald taunts them: “Do you think your behaviour in New Zealand is okay?”

Whatever the “unruly tourists” have done, it’s nothing compared to paying louts like Mike Hosking and MerreK Icrov to spray their asinine and offensive opinions each week. The woman who yelled that taunting question works for the Gerald: she therefore has no moral ascendancy over anyone.

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12197927

    1. 3.1

I’m sure they only got taunted because of their appalling behaviour. They got what they deserved, probably won’t come back to NZ which is a good thing. Thanks to social media these clowns are now well known for their nasty stuff. A lot of people in UK say about time these louts got some pushback.

      1. 3.1.1

If the mobs in Hamilton and elsewhere taunting that “unruly family” were bothered by their behaviour, why did so many of them snarl “gypsies” at them?

And why didn’t those angry, disparaging mobs taunt Gerry Brownlee or Alan Gibbs or “Sir” Robert Jones or Chester Borrows and Paula Bennett after their far more dangerous and loutish behaviour?

        1. 3.1.1.1

I agree that family was an easy target, but they brought it on themselves – can’t see how you can disagree with that.

Someone did take on Bob Jones re his NBR article, they are now headed to court. Will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

          1. 3.1.1.1.1

I hope that we can get rid of them before they cost our justice and police systems any more money. They are just low-lifes.

We have ejected apparently good people before though they weren’t white trash. We should rescind their visas. It would be cheaper for us to pay for their fares back home than chase them round the country playing ‘Where’s Wally’. And of course ban them from ever coming back.

            https://www.nzherald.co.nz//nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12197993&ref=clavis

            1. 3.1.1.1.1.1

I see that we have got shot of the tourists and they are alleging they have been tortured. What fun, there is a load of drama for them. Unfortunately Goff is said to have lost his cool and called them a..holes and worse than pigs”. I would prefer that he not say such things in public and have it appear in the media.

Star Queens Services apartment claim family applied for a one-year lease on an Auckland apartment. After being turned down and accepting a two-week lease, the family allegedly caused thousands of dollars of damage.

They managed to crash their car, perhaps hit a bumper? Left mess in a motel room. There must be exaggeration creeping in. Good that they are home. Perhaps Britain will be doing Europe a favour by making it harder for their misfits to travel.

            1. 3.1.1.1.2.1

Hilarious – you can see the stress in his face as he trying to squeeze out the dry stront. Must have had a low fibre meal the night before.

              1. 3.1.1.1.2.1.1

Oh, give me a break. How come you people believe this bullshit? People in Hamilton insulting them by calling them ‘Gypsies’? Bollocks.
I live in Hamilton, and I would say that only a 2% British immigrant element would even think of ‘Gypsy’ as an insult. Normal Hamiltonians would call them many things, but not ‘Gypsies’.
Stupid media report quoting British tourist claiming he was being insulted by Hamiltonians calling him and his group ‘Gypsies’, which is indeed an insult in his home country. But not here.
The git was making it up to justify bad behaviour, but tailored his story as if he were in Britain, where many see ‘Gypsy’ as an insult.
Sorry Morrisey, but nobody in Hamilton really snarled ‘Gypsies’ at them.
Don’t believe so readily what you read in the media, Morrisey. Don’t be such a sucker. (sarc)

                1. 3.1.1.1.2.1.1.1

only a 2% British immigrant element would even think of ‘Gypsy’ as an insult…..

Trouble is, In Vino, that small number of people is an extraordinarily vicious and vocal two per cent. It’s the same people who demean and insult Maori people. Although I note with disgust that some of the crudest voices in that mob were Maori people: mob mentality infects all sorts, sadly.

          1. 3.1.1.2.1

What? I have occasionally picked you and a few others up for your lazy and complacent recycling of nonsense you’ve gleaned from the Telegraph or Fox News or Mike Hosking. That’s not taunting. I have never stood as part of a mob like those yobs did in Hamilton and yelled insults at vulnerable people. That’s the sort of thing you would do, perhaps.

        2. 3.1.1.3

What mobs are these of which you speak morrie? Not groups of concerned comrades taking collective action to re-educate errant comrades perchance?

          1. 3.1.1.3.1

The mobs who, alerted by such moral guardians as the Herald and NewstalkZzzzzzB, gathered to taunt those people—they cursed them as “gypsies” and “pikeys” just like similar thugs would do back in Britain.

It’s a pity that Gerald woman who yelled “Do you think your behaviour in New Zealand is okay?” did not confront Chester Borrows after his court appearance for actually driving his car into a woman.

  2. 4

Eventually children learn that yelling does not win them the positive attention of others. If the habit persists into adulthood, shunning is a common social response. Continued into old age, CLOUDS become a desperate codger’s best friend.

    1. 4.1

Have a look at any American website, Sacha. Or any British one, for that matter. They will more often than not have headlines of three or more lines in bold type. That headline was unusually long for this writer, i.e. moi—two lines max is the rule generally.

      1. 4.1.1

These are comments, not articles. That was not a headline, it was a rant. And look around – what local customs seem to apply here. Calm down.

        1. 4.1.1.1

Everything you’ve written is nonsense. You don’t read enough to lecture me or anyone else on what’s appropriate or not.

The only ranting here is your unpleasant and humorless scolding. No wonder you were such easy prey for Matthew Hooton.

            1. 4.1.1.2.1.1

              ???

Because I have had to counsel poor old Sacha on her lack of nous—falling victim to Matthew Hooton, uttering harebrained critiques of the use of bold type, consistently displaying a bad-tempered and humorless response to being challenged—doesn’t mean I’m angry. I critique Sacha more in sorrow than in anger.

An extreme weather system of one kind is usually followed by an opposing extreme system. We have been experiencing a succession of very intense anticyclones, so my guess is we’ll be in for a bit of a drubbing from a deep low probably of tropical origins.

Sure enough, it looks like there might be something waiting in the wings ready to move on to the North Island around 8th February. That’s nearly 2 weeks away so roll on… we’re going to need it.

      1. 6.1.1

As a yachtsman, I have looked at weather patterns for many years. I think you two are very rash in making any prediction. By Anne’s theory, we haven’t had a real drought for a couple of years now. So maybe a real drought is due. I am sure there will be fierce tropical storms, but they sometimes stay away from us.
        Only time will tell.
Just as I thought that the cool weather from SW winds following a front were deserting us, they seem to be reoccurring this year. The current spell of heat off Australia is very little compared to what we would have got from Australia’s heat in some previous years. Maybe this is why we still have plonkers who don’t want to believe the truth of Global Warming.

        1. 6.1.1.1

After close to fifty years watching and waiting for Pacific cyclone swells I’ve made the observation that we’re seeing the ocean temperatures required to initiate tropical lows.

We usually attain those temperatures towards the end of March.

        2. 6.1.1.2

By Anne’s theory, we haven’t had a real drought for a couple of years now. So maybe a real drought is due.

Umm no, that isn’t the basis for my ‘theory’. In any meteorological extreme weather event such as we are currently experiencing, there is always a compensating trend in the opposing direction. You could describe it as nature’s way of balancing the normal calibration of the atmosphere. The opposing systems operate more or less in concert with each other even though they are displayed as separate systems.

There are of course other considerations especially when dealing with tropical conditions which does not conform to normal middle latitude models. But there will be tropical lows developing over the next couple of weeks, that is a certainty and there’s a good chance one of them will eventually affect our weather.

Mind you, CC is buggering up all the norms but that’s another story.

      1. 7.1.1

Let’s just keep it for ourselves. And spend the money on copyrighting the name before some other entity gets it as happened with Kiwi.

          1. 7.1.1.1.1

Too right. If we have a proud heritage let’s hold onto it. As I said earlier NZ idiots already failed to gather in the Kiwi name.

But a lot of our leading citizens never had to stand by the country as a whole, in any way; they just came to get a nice bit of land behind them and up their social class. (When we went to war it was to aid Britain, our mother country. The local wars were because we were trying to convince Maori it was in their best interests to give up the land they held and they didn’t agree. So we had to finally convince them.)

Hence the willingness to sell off anything good we develop or find to some other country.

      Kat,
You are obviously no fan of Audrey’s, but was she wrong in her analysis?
Doesn’t the PM have all 8 things in her to do list? None of them easy.

      1. 8.1.1

Audrey’s PR spin on behalf of the National Party is so tired it needs to be put to bed. That the PM has 8 big problems to sort out is framed all around wedging of the coalition partners. Weak and lazy commentary from a supposed senior political journalist. But then, Audrey is just a tired old National poodle.

Then again it could be the weather, it has been very hot, affecting the elderly and the young.

        1. 8.1.1.1

I read Audrey’s ranty spin and I just sighed – I’m feeling too knackered by the heat to get angry this evening. That woman simply can’t help herself. I also read another piece by Mike Hosking berating Jim Bolger and the possible changes to our employment law – the National poodles are indeed out in force. https://www.yudu.co.nz/news/how-the-government-is-about-to-wreck-the-workplace/44591/?fbclid=IwAR2NPmYlGA12igaW61YLqOlWR3NHx96oy2kK8IP_Fk3EqKAIC-ZJlzyWI5s

        2. 8.1.1.2

Any body with a poodle should be giving it a close haircut shouldn’t they? Though some of that curly wool could be insulating. As for Miss Audrey, perhaps she picked out something from last year and amended it to make it current. I can imagine her being too tired and hot to think, and her media’s expectation for incisive reportage has been so low for so long, why get up a sweat.
