I've followed this a bit but have been reluctant to comment.
The key point is in your comment though and that is right now under Mitchell and Chambers, NZ Police have not been less politically neutral since 1981. The irony.
It can't be a coincidence that Naidoo, the Police ethnic affairs lead, decided to further his career elsewhere after the coalition gained power and installed Chambers who appears to be in lockstep with Mitchell and happy to consign Coster's 'policing with consent' to the bin in favour of more aggressive colonialist policy designed to increase the brown coloured prison muster as an indicator to RW voters.
It would have been really easy for a professional, politically neutral Chambers to have made a statement wishing Naidoo well and thanking him for his many years of service. But he decided instead to invent a scenario where Naidoo is painted as an anti-government spy to be rooted out. If that is not an admission Chambers and Mitchel have cast their political weight over the Police, I don't know what is.
Most of us will have had occasions when leaving a job or tenancy or relationship where you have to manage the process to minimise the damage from an abusive and vindictive boss or landlord or partner. Labour and Naidoo knew that's what they were dealing with in Mitchell and Chambers, and that is exactly what has come to pass.

I think the voters will see through this charade. As I said yesterday, the review process will highlight a senior and well respected ethnic Indian police officer joining Labour as a candidate. Votes to Labour will follow.
National will leave no moan unturned.
