Here is something that might raise spirits. The Herald has carried out a poll of the Mt. Roskill constituency, that National won from Labour by a narrow 1564 in 2023. Labour is well ahead in the constituency race.

The Herald poll results for the Party Vote compared with 2023 are as follows:

    Labour 2023 29.8 2026 36.7

    National 2023 43.1 2026 21.6

I'm aware that it is notoriously difficult to poll constituencies, but even so these results, if they are in any way close, are excellent. National's party vote has halved, Labour's party vote has gone up 28%.

This is in vote rich Auckland. If Labour is performing well in Auckland that could bode well.

Ah, I note there have been boundary changes for the Mt Roskill constituency since the last election which will affect the poll results.

Apparently, education was one of the few areas in which Luxon did reasonably well in the leaders’ debates. One could be forgiven thinking that education is one of the top five issues that concern New Zealanders but it only ranked as the 10th most important issue in the most recent Ipsos NZ Issues Monitor, ranking below Climate Change and above Immigration.

The Post-Primary Teachers’ Association had organised a political panel on education but National and ACT were a no-show.

But in absence of National and Act representatives, the panel was largely in agreement on many topic areas, and unable to defend many of its reforms that the opposition parties attacked. [without a hint of sarcasm]

National and ACT also failed to show at a recent panel on tertiary education organised by the Tertiary Education Union.

Anyway, why spend precious campaign time on discussing education when a new RW lobby group does the dirty work for you?

Another well-organised, well-resourced, and well-connected [to whom?] lobby group connected to the Taxpayers’ Union using Curia polls as evidence to push forward its ideas & agenda. Coincidentally, or not, the lobby group launched on the same day as Nicky Hager launched his new book Dirty Work: The Taxpayers’ Union and New Zealand’s Hard Right.
