The next Prime Minister is …

Winston Peters has announced that he will be going into coalition with Labour and Jacinda Ardern will be the next Prime Minister. Let the attacks from the right about how unfair it is that a minority party did not ascend into Government and how MMP needs to be reformed begin. For the rest of us – this is a time of hope…

Nevertheless, NZF aren’t forming govt, Labour are, and they need another partner to do that. I think the Greens are taking a deal to the member delegates tonight.

        1. 1.1.1.1

They are. I’m pretty sure it’ll be a dine deal though. Greens and labour have been in talks the entire time and so I’m pretty sure the final deal will be acceptable to the delegates and to the Greens at large.

      2. 1.1.2

Great day for us 99% and NZ, now where’s that bottle of bubbly.
Thanks Winston for getting us out of bondage.
        God I love this day.!!!!!

      1. 1.3.1

I know better than you that the Greens will make their own decision. The delegates still have the power to support or veto whatever deal the Negotiation Team has developed.

              1. 1.3.1.1.1.1.1

Greens could also choose to abstain. Or have C/S with deals around policy, ministries etc.

“will accept what they’ve been given”

Good luck being able to prove that.

      2. 1.3.3

That just shows you that you know nothing about the Greens. The C and S will not be agreed unless it aligns with Green Party objectives – wait an see.

    1. 1.4

I stand by my claim that The Green’s strategy was and is superb and that they/we hold the most power right now and for the next 3 years (for starters šŸ™‚

        1. 2.1.1.1

No, from my memory of Winston’s past speeches at this stage, I think the old guy is trying to be more genuine. Good speech, as Rob says. We live in hope.

    1. 2.2

I thought it was terrible that he was defending his future record.

Things are about to turn to shit but don’t blame me for that.

A better response would have been Things are going to turn to shit due to 33 years of economic lunacy. This government will address those problems and make a better New Zealand.

    1. 7.1

      Ad

Winston was saying this for three years at every public meeting.

He saw the economic train wreck while he was in Gisborne and told the mayor Gisborne needed serious Government support.

sometime last year i bought a little bottle of whiskey at a fundraiser .

T’was singed by the MP who became PM today.

    Lucky me.

  2. 12

Post the link and I’ll pony up the money

Of course now I’ll have to go through old standard posts to bring up comments about how Labour/NZFirst don’t have a mandate because not enough people voted for them šŸ™‚

      1. 12.1.1

Done. I’ve asked them to post thanks to chris73 on an open mike thread in the comments section but whether the will or not

  3. 13

I found Peters’ speech a bit hard to follow, but he did seem to be saying we need responsible capitalism and that National wouldn’t move on this.

    1. 13.1

Yes, some limits on the free market, great news. Maybe a little wind back of the nonsense since 1984??

I don’t agree with Winston that our problems in NZ are primarily external / foreign in origin (other than the neoliberal mindset perhaps). The antisocial and exploiting super-rich are an international bunch, we have our home grown ones and international ones passing through too.

      1. 13.1.1

Yes. I’ll be interested to see what a Labour govt can do in this coalition, but it’s more a thank god it’s not National response thus far.

        1. 13.1.1.1

Thank God not Nats – Absolutely!!

It is possible that NZF will push things more left/socialist than Labour naturally would have, economically.

      1. 14.1.1

I don’t think so. But I will be interested to learn what policies were agreed that meant Greens went for C&S instead of coalition. Or whether NZ First pushed them out… Winnie did make a point that they were ever only interested in being in coalition with one party.

If it was a Greens decision to go into C&S over policy, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was immigration that was the issue.

      2. 14.1.2

By my understanding – all legislation other than C&S matters will require Green support to pass (unless Nats cross the floor). So they will have quite some influence I hope.

I voted Green and I’m certainly not considering it a wasted vote!

          1. 14.1.2.1.1

I’m not an expert on that, unfortunately. I didn’t realise there was a lot of scope for variation (by definition – you agree to support C&S, and are free to vote on other matters as you wish). But I guess there can be other things negotiated, to achieve the C&S agreement – e.g. policies, ministerial posts etc?

          2. 14.1.2.1.2

Yes it does – and I think we might be reasonably satisfied with the policy outcomes as they align with Green objectives.
An important consideration is that if Labour and NZF want to go to war for instance then a C and S does not bind the Greens from speaking against that.

      3. 14.1.3

Cut it out lurgee you know the greens will surive and become part of the government to help NZ back on it’s feet.

        1. 14.1.3.1

They are pretty close to the edge at the moment. It would only take a few supporters to defect to other parties to push them below 5% … and how often do governing parties INCREASE their vote share at subsequent elections?

A lot of people who have voted Green (including myself) will be scratching our heads at this latest arrangement and thinking, “Well, what was the point of that?” and may decide to vote Labour next time, since voting Green isn’t seeing enough of a Green agenda being pushed, and Labour will probably just do again in 2020 …

Of course, the Greens may recover, once ‘Jacindamania’ peaks, memories of Tureigate fade and Shaw becomes a bit more visible – remember how some wrote him off as a right wing infiltrator not all that long ago? – so I may be wrong.

    1. 14.2

He’s leaving it to Jacinda to announce what arrangements are/have been made between with Greens re Ministerial positions outside of Cabinet.

It actually sounds like there’s some discussion still to be had, and what has been hammered out is a broad policy platform for the next 3 years.

    1. 15.3

Doesn’t really matter if he did or didn’t (mention Greens) – if by He, you mean WP.
HE’ll agree it will be Jacinda’s call, and I’m pretty sure she, AND WP will keep their word ( if only to spite the negs)
Christ!!!! I just had a thought- what’s the AM show going to be like tomorrow morning.

    1. 19.1

The Wallabies are hoping for a 21- 10 win on Saturday at Brisbane against the ABs, it should be an interesting game on a relatively hard field with high humidity.

            1. 19.1.1.1.2.2

You didn’t back your uber-confident predictions (Winston made a deal involving Key’s early departure, ( blah, blah, blah…) with a bet???
What sort of capitalist are you, James??
              A pretend-neo-lib???
              What a softy!
              What a blow-hard!

                1. 19.1.1.1.2.2.1.2

James has been consistently wrong and spectacularly so with the Biggie! Months and months of reading his cocky sure-thing predictions have left discerning readers here thinking, “blow-hard”.
That’s all. Go char-grill yourself a slab of Hector’s dolphin, James – you know you wanna.

                  1. 19.1.1.1.2.2.1.2.1

                    Lord have mercy !

                    That’s a low blow , Roberto !

                    Good though ,… mwhahaha!

Still ,… I’m of the old school ,… never gloat at a worthy opponents downfall ,… no matter how mean streak they have been, … they were beaten , … fair and square and that’s what matters. Now onward’s to rebuilding this degraded country now National are gone.

And never doubt their attempts at devious resurgence ,… for rest assured,… they will try every which way but loose to do so from here on in.

Don’t give them the chance at any opportunity. That they do not deserve.

                      Wrong where it counts, James.
Last night’s result exposed the depth of your wrongness – Challenger Deep, and the extent of your credibility; distance between an ant’s eyes. Don’t take my teasing too seriously though, James, I’m just funnin’ ya and you sure do deserve it šŸ™‚

      1. 19.1.2

News… I thought it was meant to be pissing with rain for the game on Saturday…
which will favor the ABs massively…

  4. 20

    Well, I got that wrong.

    Bugger.

Anyway – I congratulate Labour, Jacinda, and her entire team.

Whilst its not the result I wanted, I respect it, and wish them all the very best. I think that they will have a hard time of it, but I wish them success not failure, because in the end that’s what is best for NZ.

I hope for sunny sky’s this Labour weekend so that you guys can enjoy celebrating the change in government.

    1. 20.2

      Very graceful James.

It’s a much broader tent this time ideologically and there’s room for a lot of initiatives.

If National can remember throughout the term how much they had in common with NZF, I’m sure they could contribute as well.

    2. 20.5

Nicely said james. I truly believe this is better for all kiwis and not the least, exporters. High dollar has made it a struggle for big and small exporters for a long while.

      1. 20.5.2

        Is that you Tracey ?

        You haven’t left?

Awesome ! – and yes … a low dollar is what this country has always needed to take advantage of the export dollar – its madness to try and compete against large scale economy’s like the USA and China etc.

Its going to be an economic renaissance for this small Southern Pacific trading nation.

        šŸ™‚

Lets take a deep breath and know that NZ is once more a forerunner in a changed world where people and their needs and worries play a greater role than the money man counting their winnings on the back of the poor. And lets hope that there is enough knowledge and wisdom to move forward responsibly.
Congratulations to the new government and prime minister Jacinda Ardern.

    1. 21.1

“know that NZ is once more a forerunner in a changed world where people and their needs and worries play a greater role than the money man counting their winnings on the back of the poor.”

Great description of the last 9 years (and more years before that too). Here’s hoping!

    1. 22.3

      rolf.
      I am with you.
I am totally rapt that Taxcinda has done the deed.
Its going to be very interesting and busy times from a business point of view ! šŸ™‚

      1. 22.3.1

        Taxcinda?

As I recall ,… it was Peters who stated ” there needs to be a change in the way in which this country is run both economically and socially”…

Face it ,… all those who have taken advantage of neo liberalism’s rorts are going to start feeling the pain , – as they should do as its their time for their bonny comeuppance,…

Fairs fair , my old chap.

You seriously didn’t think it could go on forever , did you , my old sausage?

    2. 22.4

So much happiness is erupting in the education sector ATM

I wonder what the future holds for english? Two failed attempts at being voted in PM by the public

      1. 22.4.1

I was rather looking forward to a bit of industrial action, just quietly …

Be a bit harder to justify if it is Labour grinding our faces into the dirt.

      2. 22.4.3

Yes @Cinny all the teachers in my FB feed are ecstatic. Speaks volumes eh? And I”m so pleased for them – they are at the coalface and they have seen it all firsthand.

As a mum, and a stepmum of a dyslexic child, I’m stoked too!

    3. 22.5

It’s not Winston that’s the problem but the mess that National have left us with:

He says there is no doubt the bubble will burst.
      Professor Steve Keen

ā€œThe bubble will burst in the next one to two years – there’s been a real acceleration in house prices since 2012, they’ve increased by about 60 percent. But what I’m seeing now is the motivating force for rising house prices is rising mortgage credit. The wind in that bubble is starting to run out.ā€

      1. 22.5.1

        True Draco,

When Labour open the treasury books they will see some doggy stuff and more $11 Billion Dolllar holes there.

  6. 23

Wooo hoooo, now that’s what I’m talking about !

A MASSIVE thanks to all who worked so very hard to make this happen.

    Bye, bye Capitalism !

    Kids are ecstatic šŸ™‚

    MMP for the win !

    1. 23.1

I don’t think we will get the change you are hoping for, I may be wrong but im not seeing radical change with Winston involved.

    2. 23.2

It’s not bye bye capitalism. Winnie’s talking about a more compassionate capitalism.

Did I just hear him talk about raising the minimum wage? The Greens would support that.

      1. 23.2.1

Winnie waffled about ‘compassionate capitalism’ because it made his decision sound like it had some higher moral purpose.

If he’d decided to go with National he’d have murmured some equally empty phrases to justify that decision.

        1. 23.2.1.1

Maybe but it sounds like he wants to bring back more conservative capitalism to me… the unwinding of neoliberalism. If that is the case then there’ll be some twitching within the Labour ranks… there’s a die-hard clique of neoliberals still holding out there.

              1. 23.2.1.1.1.1.1

Ah ,… the belated investor looking forwards to the downturn for cheap prices, mortgagee fast sales and the panic sellers, … buyer beware , my old boy ,… the bankers may want their pound of flesh ,… so that exorbitant rental just might not be worth the effort …

Better leave it to the new govt to house the people that provide the services which make your lifestyle so desirable , eh old bean ?

Time to get an honest living then and stop pretending we are lions on the Serengeti Plains , old fruit…

Leave the predators amongst the animal kingdom and let we humans conduct ourselves with some modicum of integrity ,… that’s a good lad , now…

I know you have it in you , stiff upper lip and what not , as they say.

    1. 25.1

Kiwiblog and Whale oil commentators dont seem to be too disheartened, in fact most of the KB commentators think this is a great result……not sure what that says, I hope they change their tune, when Jacinda hopefully makes real change.

    2. 25.2

I generally can’t bear even looking for a second at Whale Soil, but I just had a little peek….many teeth..gnashing.

      1. 25.2.1

I take in interest in all sides, good to know what others are thinking, can get a bit trapped in a vaccuum if you only listen to people who agree with you.

        1. 25.2.1.1

Absolutely – confirmation bias is amazingly powerful.

“Keep an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out”

  7. 26

I wanted National to win and Bill English deserved to be PM but the decision has been made and hopefully this’ll be a successful government, that way everyone wins

    1. 26.1

Chris73 – you were so confident, buoyant even, yet so wrong.
National are in Opposition now; OPPOSITION.
Oh dear, as they say, how sad.

      1. 26.1.1

It was bound to happen sooner or later however this means National can clear out the deadwood (N Smith, P Bennet, B English I’m looking at you) and they’ll be back in three, six or nine years time

        1. 26.1.1.1

In 9 years, I am hoping the Overton Window will have significantly shifted, making a return to the style of government of the last 9 years impossible. But I am being optimistic.

        2. 26.1.1.2

So, Chris, you wanted people you regard as dead wood to be PM and Deputy PM? And how does this gel with your comment at 2.6.1.1 that Bill English deserved to be Prime Minister?…

What an odd world you righties live in!

          1. 26.1.1.2.1

He did deserve to be PM however he failed to form a government so he is now deadwood, had he been able to form a government he wouldn’t be deadwood

Nick Smith, however, is deadwood no matter what would have happened

          2. 26.1.1.2.3

I think he means English “deserved” to be PM because National got more support than any other single party, righties get hung up on one single entity “winning”.

Chris is angry and as an extremist he now wants Collins or some other nasty clone to take charge and shake things up in order to breathe life back into support for nastiness.

            1. 26.1.1.2.3.1

He deserved to be PM because hes damn fine politician, he led NZ through potentially devastating times and NZ, after nine years of National rule, is the envy of most nations around the world thanks in large part to his handling of finance

              1. 26.1.1.2.3.1.2

Pretty ruthless of you to dump what you believe to be such a fine politician as deadwood in a matter of minutes.

If he’s so fucking fantastic you wouldn’t want to lose him, surely!

                1. 26.1.1.2.3.1.2.1

Hes un-electable so hes deadwood, its unfortunate but thats way it is (like Andrew Little)

He should stay for a year or so, oversee some new blood and then retire in dignity as one of the greatest ministers of finance NZ has ever seen which isn’t too shabby

          1. 26.2.1.1.1

A lot of people on the right wanted this result because they believe this government will go down in flames but that will hurt a lot of people

Better for all if whatever government is in does a good job

      1. 26.2.2

But we voted Labour/NZF so we are elated and hope you are happy for us.

“We” didn’t. Try not to re-write history in your excitement.

Labour + NZ 1st got 44.1% of the vote – less than National alone.

We did, arguably, vote for Labour-NZ First-Green, but we didn’t get that. We got Labour-NZ 1st-Gre.

FWIW, I voted Green because I wanted to prevent or minimise the influence of Winston Peters over a Labour led government. That didn’t fucking work.

    1. 27.1

I suspect there are one or two policies that have pushed the Greens into C&S but based on what I’ve heard this evening, overall I think Labour-NZ First coalition will be a Govt that the Greens can support.

    2. 27.2

I am so happy patricia as the two people I now admire the most is Jacind and Winston as they are heros of NZ now.

    1. 28.1

YAY! We have done this :-))))) Thanks to Andrew Little for making this outcome possible. Well done Prime Minister elect Jacinda Ardern.

Let’s hope NZF supports the new PM and Labour/Greens enabling a government which works in the best interests for the majority of Kiwis.

Be interesting to know what the coalition details are.

      1. 28.1.1

There you go mate – Nats all done and dusted.

Now I can hang up my blogging shoes for good , – or at least until the Nats ( unfortunately ) get voted back in.

Until then , I reckon a fair few will be singing this song tonight !!!

Congratulations and Celebrations – Cliff Richard – YouTube

          1. 28.1.1.2.1

Hehe… 9 years of corruption and cronyism dealt to… Its a joyful quiet sense of victory and satisfaction tonight , some fireworks have been going off ,…just watched Adern doing the live feed on Newshub ,… with me smiling all the time.

Just such a good result šŸ™‚

            For all of us.

        1. 28.1.1.3

WK (28.1.1) … don’t you dare go hanging up your blogging shoes. Alternative media blog sites need your stimulating and always interesting contribution.

Don’t forget there is still work to be done in making sure the treasonous Natz gang of Key, English, Joyce, Bennett, Collins, Carter et al are brought to justice for crimes against the people.

Speaking of Carter, any ideas about who the new Speaker might be? I’m thinking Mallard.

        2. 28.1.1.4

          You have blogging-shoes?
Where did you get those blogging-shoes?
          I ain’t got me no blogging-shoes !
          Give it up, Wild Katipo!
Where’d ya get those fine shoes ???
          (I wanna get me some!)

          1. 28.1.1.4.1

You poor thing,… look ,… pop down to any second hand op shop and see if you can pick up a pair ,.. they’re not too expensive and pretty commonplace. Not sure sure if it improves the quality of blogging , however ….

Have good one and don’t stay up too late ,… not good for the circadian rhythm cycle šŸ™‚

  8. 29

Thank God. After 9 years of lies and corruption………….and don’t get me started on the Nats policy………..

  9. 32

Crack open the bubbly. It’s a great night to hear that Jacinda will be Queen! Congratulations to the Labour team and Jacinda in particular.

  10. 34

Brilliant. Gotta get my ahead around being in a governing side as opposed to bewildered opposition. Gotta have hope Jacinda can unite this arrangement. Hope. Change. Yussss

  11. 36

Mike Hoskings is, surprise surprise, as sour as an old dead fish. So many things are wrong in his view of the World. Are we sorry for him? Nah!

    1. 36.2

Thank you Winston for letting me watch Hosking fronting his program through gritted teeth.
      That’s entertainment!

    2. 36.3

Looks like he is sucking on a lemon. Hopefully this will see the back of him, along with the double dipper, and the finance minister who cannot add.

      1. 36.3.1

I watched just to enjoy his reaction. I’m not into gloating on how National MPs react, but Hosking going full snowflake had been amazing. Honestly, those weak milky eyes which are usually so dead and empty are just radiating pain.

    3. 36.4

A very bitter Hosking commenting on TV tonight. Again showing his true blue colours again. The under mining of the new Govt has already started. How sad when people live in poverty and our environment is polluted. That should be the focus.

    4. 36.5

Hoskings IS a dead fish , I thought that TV1 tonight was a disgrace (our public TV channel) with a dreadful presentation lead by Hoskings , including Jacinda Adern talking on the screen with no sound, while the commentators were grumping about not knowing all the details that they wanted to be immediately made aware of. Arrogant prats.

    5. 36.6

@(36) ianmac … Hosking’s still got a face like a smacked backside this morning.

As well as Hosking, ZB’s Smith and Williams aren’t happy campers either. The old has been hack Prebble is also spitting the venom in an article over at the NZH today!

Had it far too good for too long. Now the party is over for them. Great isn’t it?

      1. 36.6.1

It’s amazing to recall how much the main stream media shifted under John key’s watch. The male, macho, shock jocks were his mates, and they rose to quite a bit of prominence.

TVNZ7 and the children’s channels were axed from Freeview, as well as the community channels like Triangle/Stratos.

RNZ’s funding was frozen. Campbell Live was axed.

However, RNZ has done very well to expand it’s platforms on limited budgets. And John Campbell chose RNZ over TVNZ – pioneering the radio with pictures public service format in NZ.

Now the Labour, NZF & GP of the incoming government are keen to revitalise public service media across various platforms, with RNZ likely to play a leading role. Meanwhile, TVNZ could be split up.

So, I expect a very happy team on Checkpoint tonight.

        1. 37.1.1.1

Just your bluntness, I actually agree with you, I think we have been served a poison chalice, but hopefully i’m wrong.

          1. 37.1.1.1.1

Peters last coalition with Labour fell cos of the Owen Gldn thing NOT a fallout with Labour per se. His fallout with Shipley was different.

            1. 37.1.1.1.1.1

Yes you are right, there’s just a feeling this time, just feels like this will crash and burn, Winston didnt ease my concerns by immediately stating that their will be a huge economic downturn but he wont be to blame. I dont know, wish Jacinda had of won on election night, just feels a bit hollow to me, anywho hope the rest of you are enjoying it.

          2. 37.1.1.1.2

Quite a few of my national voting friends were hoping for this result as going with NZ First seemed awfully risky. So I understand how you feel. I was certain the last government would do a full term but I’m not certain at all about this one.

    1. 37.2

So sad Infused that you are so bitter, ever mind youll get used to it as we had to for the last nine years of hell.

  12. 38

Breathing deeply for the first time in nine years ! Congratulations Jacinda, and thank you, Andrew Little for your selfless wisdom in stepping down ….

And Hosking’s discomfort tonight at the result is delicious … he and Bill English seeing their power dissolve into puddles around their ankles .. plus the other liars and crooks.

Fresh air coming and I do hope Greens have a minister in there.

(And English goes. Have my popcorn ready for the battles between Bennett, Collins, Joyce et al. This will be nasty and it couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch of folk.)

      1. 38.1.2

Quality of the man, quality of the candidates, honest true and loyal. Well done Andrew and Jacinda and all the team.

  13. 39

Yes heartiest congrats to Jacinda, Labour, the Greens (James Shaw says he trusts Jacinda) and yes Winston. You have done the right thing Winston.

  14. 40

This means English will go down in history for holding the primeministership twice and not completing a full term for either, hip, hip, hooray, good riddance to bad rubbish, lying basket.

Congrats to Jacinda, a new way of politics!! and new lease of life for NZ.

  15. 41

Misery the cold soup,as those chancing dare say.Long to see and not hear from the National females ,as they serious polite battle to rule.

  16. 42

Awwww the poor MSM, you can hear the moans and screams. Time to build that time machine and get back to the 80’s……Walkmans, shoulder pads……they should feel right at home…….

      1. 44.2.1

        Yes draco and Wild katipo,

Now we can lay our people to rest and find the people responsible for causing the disaster and bring them to justice.

  17. 45

A magic result. There are a large group of soft blues who have been impressed with Jacinda. I see the Nats bleeding more. There used to be a compassionate Nat vibe in Holyoake’s time, but that has vanished post Roger Douglas and the current lot. I am sure Winnie and Jacinda will have a memorable three years which will extend into the next three years with an increased majority!

    1. 45.1

Yep, I don’t think the nats will be back for 2+ terms. The Overton Window might not be their friend and they will be slow to catch up.

  18. 46

A joyful night. The old coot did good. So proud NZ will have Jacinda as PM in an age of Trump. No one wants a single party or single ideology driving the country. That’s why we voted for MMP. Maybe this time we’ll have a government that brings us together rather than divides us.

Party members care about who “wins” But those are very small numbers.

The people in this country are a little bit conservative, a little bit liberal and a little bit – maybe a lot – green. We all live together – and we don’t blow each other up for being the other.

That’s the colour of the parliament we voted for and now the colour of the government.

Hopefully now we will see MMP in action – consensus across parties around the things we care about – poverty, housing, health, education, environment.

    Hope for our future restored.

    1. 46.2

Me to Future it was so great to see the NZF/Labour join in the fight to save NZ.

Proud of Jacinda & Winston both are new heros of NZ.

    1. 49.1

Nope, at the end of the day he’s still a multi millionaire so he won’t lose any sleep over this result, if anything it will embolden him further now since can effectively go into attack and whinge mode, dont let guys like him live rent free inside your head,

    2. 49.5

Nope. He has spent much of the past hour running Jacinda down. Inferring a shambles because she’s taken so long to be interviewed. And criticising her for not giving us any detail about who will be ministers and what their portfolios will be.

He calls her “this young Prime Minister”.

He’s gunning for Winston by inferring he has far too many ministers for a 9% party.
What about Seymour and Dunne from the 0.5% parties?

      What a bad loser.

      1. 49.5.1

It must be hard for Bill – this is where his ambitions die. It’s unlikely his colleagues will let him lead into another election – despite the lack of surviving talent.

          1. 49.5.1.1.1

Oops – sorry – I’ve been staying away until the decision was actually made.

With a bit of luck Hosking will go the same way.

        1. 49.5.1.2

Hard for Bill? Don’t see that. I see a resignation and a gladiator contest.Swords and breastplates? Nah. MMA more likely. Lol

    3. 49.7

@ (49) Roy …. oh absolutely. My heart bleeds for the Natz gobshite … not! Long may he continue to dwell in purgatory!

  19. 50

The nats will stymie this government at every turn via their media mates and in processes like select committees where they will have a large presence. In my view Winston needs to take a step back for a few months and let Jacinda dictate the new governments headlines and position. If he doesn’t and decides that he deserves the limelight just as much as her, this coalition is doomed to fail. He could start by not accepting the deputy PMs job.

    1. 50.1

Don’t worry. One of the things that is characteristic of Winston is that he respects the chain of command. If he disagrees then it will either be in the cabinet or it will be as a public statement as he effectively resigns.

If it involves his party, then that is different story.

Look at his track record. It is National who have done the dirty on him and his party each time – all the way back to when he left it.

      1. 50.1.1

Maharey said a few weeks ago that the last time Peters was in a Labour-led govt he worked hard, did his job well, and worked well with others.

        1. 50.1.1.2

          Yes Weka,
          I heard that as well.

Winston has mellowed and accomodating now, todayhe said he has no bad words of greens leader at all.

  20. 51

Hosking eh? His manner, tone and body language are a delight to behold!

Maybe a good time for a shake up at our ‘National’ broadcasting company.

    1. 51.2

So TVNZ’s going to be split up, news going with RNZ/etc he’s likely out of a job …. that’s why he’s mad

      1. 51.2.1

Paul Campbell, thats the best thing that ever happend.

NZF has a good public broadcasting policy. (non comercial)

“So TVNZ’s going to be split up, news going with RNZ/etc he’s likely out of a job …. that’s why (Hoskings) he’s mad”

    2. 51.3

Poor Carolyn, you could tell she was mildy happy but knew sitting right next to her was a simmering ass so she had no hope of celebrating the result.

  21. 52

Winston has shown compassion, and for that I thank and praise him.

He’s looking for a government with a human face.

He and NZF have chosen well.

    1. 52.1

      Thanks Mac,

I am a convert to Winston he is a genuine guy I met him in Gisborne and talking with him he is a great man.

  22. 53

Great news. Looking forward to pouring over the coalition agreement. Labour had some pretty good regional development plans for Dunedin, plus a new public hospital instead of a public-private-partnership. It’s likely local MP David Clark will be minister of health. He’s got a lot of work to do.

A $50 increase to student allowance/living costs should flow into the local economy too. Also looking forward to my niblings having reduced tuition costs and night classes resuming.

  23. 54

Mike Hosking, with smugness turned up to Max:

    Where is the Prime Minister?

    Fantastic trolling.

EDIT – I meant Hosking trolling the left. But then I realised the last three weeks has been Winston Peters trolling Mike Hosking!

  24. 58

I hope Andrew Little will be offered a role that calls for selfless big call judgement. A plan to change horses midstream generally has more going against it than for it.

  25. 60

Ardern just said they tried to be proportional in giving out Ministerial positions. Good for them. Details will come after the Greens have made their own announcement.

    1. 63.1

Have just listened to Jacinda’s speech and my god she is good, eloquent and clear and oh so prime ministerial. I think this lady is going to do a good job of being PM. She said there were posts for the Greens in the Government and I cannot see the Greens not agreeing to this coalition.

God luvva duck it is such a relief to have this breath of fresh air filling Parliament, now we need to give her the support and encouragement to see this 3 year term through without any turmoil. She has exceptional people skills I just cannot see her not getting on with Winstone, she is gracious, intelligent, strong and everything that Winnie will just get on with just fine. Remember Condaleeza Rice – she was exactly that, gracious, good on the eye, gifted with a great brain and capable. Winnie’s not stupid and I think they ill be a good team together with the Greens and James Shaw.

There is a God after all.

  26. 65

Poor Corin Dann looks like he is about to burst into tears.

And Mike Hosking. He will be crying himself to sleep.

Jacinda to TVNZ, 9am tomorrow: “Get that sonofabitch out of here! He’s FIRED!!..”

  27. 69

Credit where credit is due. Former PM, Bill English has just given a press conference and he could not have been more gracious in defeat.

  28. 72

When Mike Hosking comes on zb in the mornings I turn to radio to another station. Not tomorrow. I want to hear him.

  29. 73

I am so happy right now. Not just because Jacinda is PM and those Goddamn born to rule Tory assholes are all tasting the bitter medicine of defeat, but because I suspect NZ First is after real change, and this government will pull the Overton window firmly to the left.

So, comrades, if that is case – the fight has just begun. Powerful forces of reaction will not be happy. The media lackies of the right are aghast. The fight will be long, hard, and the election was just the beginning.

    1. 73.1

Powerful forces of reaction will not be happy. The media lackies of the right are aghast.

The dollar’s already fallen. Oh the poor wee things. Not used to defeat are they.

      1. 73.1.2

Winston has been making the point that our high dollar hurts exporters, so it’s good to see the traders implementing that so quickly…

        1. 73.1.2.1

^^^^^ Shameless plug for the free market aka neo liberalism…

Guess what ,… Peters wants the Reserve Bank. … ( and by association the Federal Reserve ) wings clipped.

The age of interventionist and regulatory govt is now upon us.

The first steps towards an equitable society.

How that must hurt the far right wing neo liberal.

I have no tears for them to shed.

  30. 74

“Jacinda Ardern is next prime minister of New Zealand, Winston Peters confirms – live”

Up on The Guardian front page within minutes!

  31. 76

The shredders and delete buttons will be in overdrive around parliament and government departments right now!

Hopefully Hosking and a swag of other media Natzis will get the same treatment that John Campbell received under National. This should be a priority-control the message.

It sounds dictatorial but hey, we’ve been living in propaganda state for some time now, nothing will change except the message. There is an urgent need to reverse the brainwashing that has occured over the last 9 years (or maybe 30 years!).

Winston should keep the neoliberal arm of the Labour party constrained.

  32. 79

Good bye to ‘slight of hand’ corruption, could not have happened to better people. Go lie and deny rights somewhere else National.

  33. 80

oh joy! And watching Hosking do his sour lemon impersonation was most enjoyable. What a ludicrous performance.

  34. 82

Congratulations guys. I voted National but I like Miss Adern and think she’ll be a popular Prime Minister. I truly hope this government is successful and can deliver what they want to deliver and make NZ a better place. Hopefully in 3 years I’ll be admitting I was wrong to vote the way that I did.

  35. 84

james ,how are you faring? Don’t know your situation re under Roberts troll bridge? If he gets all smart arsed and power crazy after the election and throws you out feel free to doss down under my porch for the next month or so.

    1. 84.1

I’m reigning in my glee, td, for the sake of James’ self-esteem; that said, your offer of a porch for James is kind, and he’ll be drawn, no doubt, but remember, trolls will be trolls, and bridges are their natural home.

        1. 84.1.1.1

“The Bridges” Multiplex housing facility for trolls of all persuasions; comfortable under-bridge living for the hopelessly addicted internet troll; free wifi, unlimited pharmaceutical solutions for common troll complaints; jock-itch, trench-foot, RSI (wrist) and eye-strain. Trouble with finance? Try betting on the results of the 2017 Election – there’s still time, and nothing is cast in stone (troll humour there).

  36. 85

Reflecting on Hoskings. Seems that a number of us tuned onto 7Sharp just watch him behave so badly. He is very very funny. He would hate to know that some laugh at him.

    1. 86.1

All three leaders excelled themselves tonight. Jacinda and James have the presence and talent to be great leaders inside government and with Winston Peters’ longevity and experience it looks set to be a hugely successful govt. on many fronts. And that is despite the mud and dirt the new Opposition will throw at them.

  37. 87

I’m pinching myself! Such great news! NZ Labour, NZ First and NZ Greens! A government for all New Zealanders!

  38. 88

After years of darkness it is great to finally see the light.

I had serious doubt we would get to this point and we have to thank Andrew Little for this result and Jacinda’s massive talent, empathy and determination to seek a mandate for change.

There is no doubt the new government’s enemies will waste no time in putting the boot in as Horrible Hosking has already demonstrated tonight with his usual negative diatribe.

It should be an interesting next few weeks and beyond.

Congratulations to Jacinda and the Greens.

  39. 90

So it’s bye bye David Carter, charter schools, and unnecessary RONS… and the Crusher is probably cranking up her machinery!

    1. 90.1

i cant to wait to see Paula Bennett’s face heading to opposition who do you think the new speaker will be hope fully the new government will launch a criminal probe into the national party.

      1. 90.1.2

hope fully the new government will launch a criminal probe into the national party.

I sincerely hope they’ll do nothing of the sort. That would be a job for the Police.

  40. 91

Don’t you just love how the coalition negotiations took just long enough to wash away that National Party born-to-rule triumphalism the emerged on elecition night.

  41. 93

The adrenalin having worn off, it it must be pointed out that Labour/GRN/NZF have to have their shit together 100% of the time. Only one shot at this, against an opposition that will through literally EVERYTHING at them.

A military coup may well be in the mix.

Its going to be one hell of a ride.

    1. 93.1

Ok I get that emotions are riding high but this:

“A military coup may well be in the mix.”

I’m about to type something that is the most heartfelt sentence I’ve written on this site and I hope you read it and realize just how pathetic you are, that sentence is:

“Fuck off with your bullshit fantasies you disgusting piece of shit”

and if it earns me a banning well so be it

      1. 93.1.1

        @c73
It is nonsense for millsy to suggest the NZ Defence Force would/could ever do such a thing. In fact I have no doubt there are Labour and Green voters among them.

        Just let it go mate.

        1. 93.1.1.1

Why not? It’s been done before. John Key employed the SIS to discredit the leader of the opposition, Phil Goff, in 2011

        2. 93.1.1.2

It annoys the hell out of me when some fat, useless, arsehole thats never done anything, and I do mean anything, of note with their life writes crap like that

Hes talking about the guy or girl from down the street, the friend of a friend, the uncle, the sister who joined up because they wanted to serve or they were bored or maybe they just wanted a job or learn a job or any other possible reason

Hes talking about NZers staging a coup because of an election result, hes comparing the NZDF to a third world military dictatorship

I served and as part of my service I was in East Timor so I’ve seen first hand exactly what it means when the military flexes its muscles against a civilian population

Millsy is a fantasist that keeps wising for things to happen that if they really did happen would make him piss his pants in fear

          1. 93.1.1.2.1

I think Millsy was meaning National would be so livid they would try anything to retain power. I doubt he was disrespecting the integrity or neutrality of the NZDF as you suggest.

          2. 93.1.1.2.2

Yes I also served as a civilian on an airforce base doing a highly specific task. As you say, they’re your neighbours, friends, relatives, work associates etc. millsy was having a little flight of fancy.

  42. 95

    1. 97.1

He’ll be back tomorrow, after the daily hangover, now undermining instead of defending the New Zealand government.

  43. 98

Bill English is now being rewarded for paying out 1.6 Billion to private SCF investors.

    Un-electable then, and un-electable now.

    Un-electable.

  44. 100

Great news, congratulations Labour, NZF, Greens and NZ!!

And I don’t have to buy the boss a bottle of bourbon, but I’ll share with him the bottle he now owes me!!

      1. 101.1.1

Could be that and it gives him time to cement the attack line the un-electable Bingles will pick up for the next three months before he’s savaged by Collins.

    1. 103.1

Re. Fireworks, I can report more than a couple of warehouse boxes being let off last night in palmy.

Good result, now the work starts keeping them honest.

  45. 105

The result was sealed once Winston got in the kingmaker position. Solid result the outcome was just a formality. Death to neo liberalism as Peters says.

  46. 106

If you cold lot looked over to the Daily Blog you would see exuberance at the result. You are only exhibitive of an old salty assessment of us.

‘We are much beholden to Machiavel and others, that write what men do, and not what they ought to do.’ Francis Bacon (1561-1626). Arrested in later life for corruption despite his philosophizing. There is a thing called feeling rather than this dead duck politicizing.

  47. 107

God it would be good to have the National party exposed for their crimes and misdemeanours.

Somehow i don’t think it will be a priority for the new government.

    1. 107.1

survival will be the number one priority for the new Government. Bring it on . I can see why National ran a mile . Good luck guys, you are going to need it.

  48. 108

Thank you God, Andrew Little, Jacinda, Winston and James Shaw.
Am going to sleep relieved, hopeful and happy in Aotearoa for the first time in nine long years.
Fantastic outcome, fantastic night, fantastic MMP.

  49. 109

The telling comment from Winston Peters:
ā€œFor too many New Zealanders capitalism has not been their friend but their foe, ā€ Peters said, claiming vulnerable New Zealanders had been left behind while the political elite got richer.
ā€œWe believe capitalism must regain its human face, and that conviction deeply influenced our decision.ā€

  50. 111

9 years of crony , corrupt , National government. Gone.

Heads will now start to roll.

Look for the vipers to come out of the nest. Bennett , … interestingly ,… smiled on cue but looked on with viper eyes at English during his ‘ humble concessionary ‘ speech.

    Humble my arse.

    National are gone.

But the colossal damage they did to tens of thousands of people over that time fills me with this , … and I’m sure it does you as well….

    Judgement day has arrived.

Texas Hippie Coalition – “Pissed Off and Mad About It” Carved …

  51. 114

    “Lets do this”

The majority voted for change and we ask labour/NZfirst with greens support to do this, and rid all the managers and board directors from every Gov’t agency,SOE and ‘Ministries’ so we can impliment our real change please.
