Same sh*t different election

The English Election campaign and the results felt like a rerun of the New Zealand 2014 election campaign.  Slick Crosby Textor designed attacks on Labour’s stability and on the leader and an imbalance of resources contributed to the result in both cases.  How does the left counter this?

Cunliffe’s statement

Labour’s Council is currently meeting. David Cunliffe is expected to make a statement today at 2:30. It will be covered live by RNZ, 3 News and other outlets.  Update:  David Cunliffe has announced his resignation from the leader’s position but will contest the vacant leadership.  Get ready for a leadership contest …

A clear Cunliffe win

David Cunliffe’s performance in tonight’s head-to-head with John Key was exactly what I wanted to see from the next Labour Prime Minister of NZ.

Kia Kaha

David Cunliffe’s message to members and supporters (repost from email) It’s been a tough couple of days for everyone in Labour, but I […]

Dreams for kids

On Children’s day Labour went out and asked people what their dreams for Kiwi kids were. David Cunliffe read some of the responses […]

The right thing to do

David Cunliffe has pledged that the next Labour government will pay the court-ordered compensation owed to the families of the disaster’s victims, and […]

“The purists can weep”

Labour’s new KiwiAssure policy has been welcomed by John Armstrong as good politics. And it is. But it’s also good policy – at the same time we’ve got a government hell bent on making sure electricity profits flow to overseas investors, David Cunliffe’s policy is about giving Kiwi’s the ability to ensure that any money made from their insurance stays in the country and pays for hospitals, schools, and New Zealanders’ retirement.

Labour’s three factions

It’s interesting how little understanding there is of the state and politics within the Parliamentary Labour Party. A lot of the coverage of Labour’s internal workings has tended to personalise the tension – it’s been focused on Shearer vs Cunliffe without any questions about what lies beneath.

Jones cleared

Well, cleared might be a slight exaggeration but he’s not going to have the police turn up on his doorstep and right now that’s good enough for a David Shearer who is worrying about the lack of brown faces in his top-team.

Brian Edwards on Shearer

The macho posturing we’ve seen from David Shearer since conference never quite gelled with the Shearer I knew. I’d always thought of him […]

Some good vision

David Cunliffe delivered a solid speech yesterday in New Lynn laying out some good thoughts on the state of New Zealand.

In it he’s been very clear on what’s happened to New Zealand. in the last thirty years.

2c on the leadership

In the end it comes down to two questions.  Are the public looking for a good bloke, or are they looking for a compelling politician?  Which of the two can unite, motivate, and lead, the caucus and the wider party?

Parker withdrawing

David Parker has withdrawn from the leadership race of the Labour party according to Stuff. Predictably Kiwiblog, Stuff, and probably the other right-wing […]

The borrow and hope budget

It’s only taken two and a half years of mismanagement and reckless tax cuts from to run the country  into a mountain of debt. How bad have they let things get, who will they make pay for their mistakes, and how rosy will the forecasts their plans hang on be? Rolling coverage through the day.

Updates: Plans for privatisation are set out.  Families hit harder than expected.

Re:Cunliffe re:me re:his speech

It was pretty cool that the next Finance Minister wrote a post about my post yesterday. Even if was to say I was dickishly misinterpreting him  😀 I’ve got a couple of points in reply but the biggest is why is Labour talking about (restrictive) privatisation and PPPs policies when there are much more important economic issues at hand?

Cunliffe’s bad politics

By backing private public partnerships David Cunliffe has potentially given the government a free pass on privatisation – one of the biggest issues of the next election.

That’s bad policy and bad politics. I expected better from him.

Cunliffe hits the mark

Just had a look at David Cunliffe on the Nation and was quite impressed.

Worth a look to see someone running a left economic argument well.

The Brash budget

Colin James makes a good point in his latest column which talks about the rightward shift this budget has created: Longer term, the […]

Bold economic leadership… from the Opposition

I’m glad to see Labour is stealing a march on the lazy Nats and building an alternative economic vision ahead of the Budget. It looks to be just the vision New Zealand needs, built on the twin planks of economic sovereignty and a fairer distribution of wealth.

Cunliffe slams English; English misleads House

Today in the House David Cunliffe took Bill English on over his lies regarding Labour’s record on economic growth. Rather than admit that he had been using the wrong figures in an effort to make Labour’s record look worse, English compounded his sins by lying to the House.

Trev nails Tolley, other Lab MPs fail

Success for Opposition frontbenchers largely consists of embarrassing their opposite number by forcing them to answer questions they would rather not. Labour showed both how to do that and how not to do it in the House yesterday.

Look Mum they stole my city …

After the success of the meetings about the super-city in Waitakere and Manakau yesterday, here are a few more of interest in date […]

Break-in

This just in from Radio NZ: Police are investigating a break-in at the electorate office of a senior Labour MP, David Cunliffe, in […]

Ryall: disgraceful
