Did Lianne Dalziel just prove how economically challenged the National Party are? It appears Christchurch will be able to pay its quake bill without flogging off the family silver. Why are the right so wedded to asset sales when they make no financial sense?
The New Zealand First MP had no answers for the Māori Party co-leader after NZF pulled their support for five major Treaty settlements at the eleventh hour.
You have to wonder about the quality of some of the economic process control that goes on for National’s politically important subsidies to the farming industry. A economic review of a Wairarapa Water application for second stage feasibility funding from the Irrigation Acceleration Fund for the “Black Creek” and “Tividale” irrigation schemes makes it look like government funded boondoggle.
The Green MP delivered his valedictory yesterday, calling on MPs to “be brave – stand for something.”
So Key has been trying to explain the TPP to America. Apart from looking ridiculous, what did he think he was going to accomplish?

Bar the ear-worm, nothing to do with Led Zeppelin.
Paul Romer is an economist highly respected by his peers, and about to become the Chief Economist at the World Bank. He’s also just published a paper rubbishing the last 3 decades of macroeconomics.
Martin Wolf, chief economics commentator at the Financial Times is challenging fractional reserve banking. It’s certainly time for some new ideas.
Donald Trump has now finally accepted publicly that Barak Obama was born in America. But claims that Hillary was the cause of the birther theory.

National’s latest plan to do something about the housing crisis is to buy a Motel and kick families who stay there out on the street.
The government didn’t make much of a show of Conservation Week – which was probably for the best the Conservation stories coming out weren’t exactly positive for it. US wanting us to do more on dolphins, the Kermadec sanctuary, fish dumping…

This week has been a revelation in how willing Pākehā are to throw Māori under the bus for the sake of environmentalism.
London-based macro-economist Ann Pettifor will speak on this topic at Wesley Church, 75 Taranaki Street, Wellington, on Tuesday 20 September at 5:30pm. Ann is a member of the Green New Deal Group, whose proposition is designed to power a renewables revolution, create thousands of green-collar jobs and rein in the distorting power of the finance sector while making more low-cost capital available for pressing priorities. All welcome; more info inside.

It is local government election time. If you want to vote for progressive candidates these are some suggestions.

It’s Conservation Week. We should all go and enjoy the great outdoors this weekend… but be careful of the polluted rivers and the wallabies. But at least we’ll be pest-free by 3300…

National is very proud of the latest GDP-growth figures (third highest in OECD!), but are they helping you? And are they what they appear?
The PSA has produced a nice guide to cut through all the buzzwords in local body elections.
TS regular Tony Veitch has some practical ideas as to how we insulate NZ from the ravages of neoliberalism and climate change. Readers may agree with some, none or all of the suggestions. However, whichever way you look at it, the time for hand wringing is over. It’s time for action.
The Dominion Post has received not one, but two polls on the Wellington mayoralty. So who’s coming out on top?

The Maori Party are threatening to pull out of their confidence & supply agreement with National. This would leave National with a Hair-thin majority in the House. The Kermadec Sanctuary, if handled with competence instead of arrogance, should have been a massive win for National.
Vic Crone isn’t sure humans are causing climate change, Palino doesn’t think Auckland is all that super, and Mark Thomas just wants people not to vote for Goff… It’s hardly an enticing bunch.
