We are sailing
Greta Thunberg just sailed from the UK to the US on a compact, carbon-zero yacht. Mostly she is being lauded for her activism and personal commitment. Some grumpy ones are less enthusiastic, seemingly missing the point and looking for any excuse to pull her down.…

Crims gangs and extremists
I almost feel sorry for National, almost. When Labour's or the Green's base complain they ask questions about what are the left's elected representatives doing about climate change, or inequality or child poverty? And are they creating an inclusive tolerant society where everyone gets on…

The Minister for the Environment, David Parker, announced yesterday that an application from Westpower to divert the Waitaha River for hydo-electric power generation had been declined. Forest and Bird were delighted with the decision. It's a very good decision for a number of reasons. One…

Missile test shows US bad faith on INF Treaty
US's recent test of an intermediate range missile shows that the reasons given for its withdrawal from the INF treaty were spurious. It also shows the gullibility of our MFAT, who voted against a Russian proposal for dialogue late last year in the UN on…

The Herald this morning contains details of further information provided by Jami-Lee Ross to the Herald indicating that there is a rather large hole in our electoral laws which needs fixing. Matt Nippert has the details: Former National Party MP Jami-Lee Ross has dropped a…

National are lighting political dumpster fires while the Amazon burns
https://twitter.com/NZNationalParty/status/1165819895973437440 https://twitter.com/unapower/status/1164502503821647873 https://twitter.com/DrewLa5/status/1164364690820096001 https://twitter.com/ena_bean27/status/1164203219444273152 I laughed grimly when I saw the imagery of National's tweet and how neatly it mirrored what is happening in Brazil. It's not funny of course. They're fools of the highest order. They either don't understand what climate change is (in…

National tacks right
This morning National released its economic policies for discussion ready to go into the next election. And there are some doozies. Like these: Increase age of eligibility for superannuation to 67 although not until 2038. Take the bright line test for land back to 2…

Those who see fascism emerging under Trump can observe the full modern version in action now in Hong Kong's contest of protesters with the Chinese government. In a really weird moment this weekend I found myself agreeing with US Senate leader Mitch McConnell, who in…
