So far in states that are likely swing states in November, Bernie has won or been close. The states that Hillary has solidly won are likely solidly Republican in November. Florida and Ohio are going to be really interesting on the 15th March.

The FBI head is in the country. He met with Judith Collins. He met Chris Finlayson.

Is there a journalist who can ask either of those two quite specifically: “Did you have discussions with the FBI head about President Obama visiting New Zealand?”
    or
“Did you have discussions with the FBI head about the possibility of President Obama visiting New Zealand?”
    or
“Did you have discussions with the FBI head about arrangements should President Obama visit New Zealand?”

Collins and Finlayson should be arrested on suspicion of espionage then. Of course, Finlayson would then have to consent to proceedings as the Attorney-General…

Yes but it is a bit of a stretch.

And someone should explain that what REALLY degrades women (mainly, but also men) is not having fair rape trials.

      Stream of consciousness:

      – References Kim Kardashian splashing herself across twitter with a naked photo (with the same blacked out privates) yesterday to “celebrate International Womens Day”: https://twitter.com/KimKardashian/status/707343955076190209
      – Kardashian was widely attacked for that being a vacuous/counterproductive/self-promoting gesture that does nothing to advance the cause of women in 2016
      – Comparison is thereby drawn between Collins and Kardashian
      – You realise that Collins is a self-promoting , vacuous politician more interested in her own image than getting actual results (lets crush some carz! look gangz!)
      – You realise that what Collins actually does is counter-productive to the cause of assisting police/reducing crime in 2016 (police budget freeze, focus on distractions/politically kneecapping her enemies).

There’s some slightly funny white noise in that the pic shows it as a tweet from a Whalespew account. So more than a couple of references stuck together. I got a chuckle out of the cartoon but even more out of some of the indignation being expressed on twitter ><

      1. 3.5.1

Didn’t KK tweeted her pic this morning? I don’t think Emmerson allowed enough time for the pop culture reference to spread far enough. Was that published in a newspaper? Even more so then.

Just before I saw Edwards’ tweet I had seen some clickbait on Stuff (which I didn’t follow) something about Key screaming when finding a burglar in his house, so the cartoon’s thing about the police not coming got jumbled in my brain (I don’t see a lot of MSM, so didn’t know if the Key thing was a prominent story of the day or not).

I think the links between Collins and KK and their actions being counter productive really are a stretch. As Sasha says, it’s all a muddle.

Irony points thought for sexism on IWD. I didn’t see indignation on twitter, just the same confusion as here and yep it’s sexist.

It suggests that Crutcher likes publicity very much, likes to think she’s one of the cool kids, likes to strut around acting all emperory like she gets things done and double dares you to call her on it.

“So far iv [sic] collected nearly 300 voting papers from neighbours and friends that couldn’t care less. All have been ticked new flag,”

Bloody righties, they don’t know any respect!!!

😉 (just in case, that’s a joke about how much the left were blamed for posting anti-Key FB messages when the posters weren’t overtly party political).

Interesting to see Stuff and Radio Live call them a thief when their comment could mean that they asked for the papers and were given them. Still illegal to use them, but it’s not theft.

      1. 6.1.1

Actually the stuff article does say that the person posting that comment claims to have stolen them.

“Radio Live reported that one thief had even posted on a Facebook page saying he had stolen hundreds of papers out of mailboxes.”

          1. 6.1.1.1.1

I’ll take some Darwin Award candidate boasting on FB about nicking papers over the utter shambles that is govt run IT in NZ, any day of the week.

            1. 6.1.1.1.1.1

IMO, The NZ government’s biggest problem is that it out-sources to the private sector rather than having it’s own dedicated IT department. Then it goes off and buys huge projects with attendant huge cost blow-outs rather than having the ongoing small incremental upgrades that it needs.

And it’s not the ones you hear about that are the problem but the ones that you don’t hear about. Because if one person’s doing this then chances are others are as well. We’re not talking hundreds of voters being screwed over but thousands.

Really, the only option the government has right now is to can this referendum and start again. But, considering their dedication to democracy, I doubt if they will.

              1. 6.1.1.1.1.1.1

You may be right about the IT problems, but I’m still not going to trust National or Labour to get this right any time soon. Once they’ve got a decade of IT competency withing govt departments under their belt, then maybe we look at online voting.

I don’t know if there will have been widespread theft of voting papers. I can see it either way. Either there is more than we know about, or it’s not something in NZ culture yet. Rest assured, now that it’s on social media it will be a problem in the future :-/ I think there are other solutions to expore before we look at online voting.

I agree about canning the referendum. I’ll be very interested to see what if anything comes out of the theft and false voting investigation.

                1. 6.1.1.1.1.1.1.1

You may be right about the IT problems, but I’m still not going to trust National or Labour to get this right any time soon.

Certainly not while they’re both still doing the out-sourcing to private companies to get competition.

I think there are other solutions to expore before we look at online voting.

You’ve got either polling booths or mail voting both of which have their faults and insecurities. Polling booths can have miscounts which could be from the same motivation as these.

Mail voting is actually the worst I could possibly think of for security issues and polling booths aren’t cost effective enough or responsive enough for referenda outside of the general election.

        1. 6.1.1.2

Though I see what you mean weka, the quoted part in the article alone does not say how the person got the papers. I took it to mean there was more from the commenter that was not quoted.

          1. 6.1.1.2.1

It was hard to know who they were talking about (was your thief the same as mine?). I find the ad breaks in MSM online pretty distracting to the flow of a piece. Maybe there isn’t a flow anymore and it’s just a jumble of sentences thrown together to fit around the ads.

          2. 6.1.1.2.2

And you all realise that the words of the supposed shonky voter are being taken as gospel. The person is boasting about not behaving properly for the referendum, so is contemptuous of systems and authority, so perhaps that person is contemptuous of the truth. What’s a fun lie in a life that has lost it’s hold on whatever standards people are trying to retain?

“@LI_politico “corrupt misogynist strong man John Key” they got his full name right.”

      Ha ha ha.

This week, an opposition Green Party MP asked the Prime Minister if the legislation would be structured to roll back if the TPP collapses. The PM refused, saying that he would go through with the economic suicide pact even if it turns out to be unilateral.

“I completely understand that some feel passionate about these things.”
But from an economic perspective the ownership of a particular asset didn’t really matter, he said.’

and therein lies the problem….it is an academic exercise divorced from reality

      1. 7.2.1

The Treasury PR piece could have been written by JP Morgan or Goldman Sachs. No mention of the dangers of uncontrolled foreign investment.

wtf kind of economist doesn’t understand that
        a) utilities can extract super profits from target populations due to monopoly power
        b) the pattern of foreign investment is to extract wealth from the target state and liquidate/asset strip when things go south
        c) foreign capital & the corporate model does not invest to build a nation, they are a corrosive force aiming to exploit markets and externalise costs

This treasury wonk aids and abets looting, pillaging & polluting corporations.
Must be looking to work at an investment bank after his current gig?

Just saw an ad on TV3 featuring a Christian evangelising – suggesting people visit a church at Easter. That’s novel.

Listening to NZQT today, John Key doesn’t even pretend to be concerned about farmers,in response to Grant Roberston’s question, even more flippant and very slurred. Just appalling, I don’t know how Labour can restrain themselves.

    1. 9.2

Labour seem as disinterested as key does with no fire in the belly on behalf of those being screwed over by the hollowmen.

They seem to typify the saying that ‘oppositions don’t win, govts lose elections’.

      1. 9.2.1

Maybe this is a chance to build a bridge that classically exsists between the farmer and the working class.
Who better than the party that represents workers?
