The Standard hosting is moving

Hi all,

I’m moving the hosting of The Standard from a server in my living room in Grey Lynn Auckland to a cloud hosting this weekend.

There are likely to be short periods when the site will be unavailable or showing a maintenance screen. Hopefully not too much.

We’re heading to Invercargill for family reasons for about six months. Our apartment will be overrun with people sprucing it up, including electricians and people doing plastering and painting. Then we’re likely to have have people staying. So I’m taking The Standard server in the apartment with us in the trailer.

I will try out a hosting site that I have previously been using for testing over this week and for the week of travelling. I have tested that host for everything except for loading issues and connectivity to the CDN (Content Delivery Network). If it works, the site will remain at the hosting site with some beefed up data and access security. If not, then I will put the old server back on line.

So if the site becomes slow, it is likely that innumerable AI bots and search crawlers are slowing the hosting systems more than I’m currently expecting. In which case, you’ll find The Standard will be coming to you from the deep south for a while.

Cheers

    Good luck with the migration….

Usual fun and games about licenses when shifting domains from thestandard.org.nz to thestandard.nz.

Currently Jetpack, W3TC, GA, Wordfence and our mobile version all have license issues.

Not quite sure what has happened to the header image…..

So the site will be slower, get more spam, and won’t have a mobile version for a bit. I may have to fork out a bit of cash if the support people are slow getting back to me.

Still don't know why the header image isn't loading. The Total Cache is operational. Looking at the email about Mobile and Wordfence.

Still don't know why the header image isn't loading. But I see issues with async loads and renders. I might look at the memcache next. The Total Cache is operational but can't do well without a decent cache. Looking at the email about Mobile and Wordfence.

Having caching problems. I just disabled all of them.

I'm getting a lot of access denied responses. I was getting a few before the move, but today it's maybe 30 – 40% of times I try to open a page. Seems to come in waves.

none of my bookmarks are working now, they all redirect to the front page.

just realised that’s because the URL has changed!

Yeah, I have been meaning to do that for years. Since I convinced a publishing company in the US that we needed it more than they needed the URI parked.
Turned out that it was hard to test with the same URL. So I used that.
However it caused me issues with the plugins.

Ok, I will fix that. It is meant to redirect to the same names on the new site.

You probably know but the site was throwing a 508 error this morning

Wow. I've had to tighten up on the bot traffic. And make wordfence paranoid.

But one of the side-effects of changing the URL from thestandard.org.nz to thestandard.nz has been a full re-read by google search (341k page reads in the past few days) and almost every other search bot.

I'v pruned back the search bots, also the wordfence scans of comments. See how this goes today.
