I know I shouldn’t sweat the small stuff, but this piece by Rachel Smalley is full of lies about Labour. We deserve better journalism than this.
National needs to do something to address spiraling education costs in both the secondary and tertiary sectors.
A right wing “think-tank” wants to load students up with even more debt.
“Revealed: Labour’s plan to wipe student debt”. Nope. Saved you a click.
Education is a public good, but tertiary education in NZ has been undermined by high student fees and debt. So it’s very encouraging to see a proposal from Labour for reducing fees (and not ruling out free education!).
Data released to the Sunday Star-Times shows a huge decline in numbers of tertiary students, including declines in many key skills and fields. Various explanations are offered, only one of them makes sense…
Yesterday, David Cunliffe,on Peter Dunne’s Student Loan Amendment Bill, & the related inter-generational swindle, labelled Dunne as “Minister for Small Changes” & “for Small Things”. Dunne further showed his support of the “neoliberal” swindle, with a couple of tweets on non-residents buying NZ property, smearing the Greens as racist.
An anonymous editorial in The Herald yesterday suggested that the government raise revenue by cutting the “sacred cow” of interest free student loans. For some strange reason the sacred cow of National’s tax cut bribe for the rich was not similarly offered up for sacrifice. I wonder why that might be.
Student loans will remain interest free, but the Nats are planning to rein them in “in a big way”. I guess that means that typical Nat slash-and-burn thinking will result in damaging restrictions to educational access in due course.
One of the worst effects of student loans is to drive young graduates overseas. What could possibly be stupider? So it’s good to see a policy from this government that is at least a step in the right direction.
I had a free education. Most of the politicians in this and recent parliaments had a free education. More recent students have not […]

A universal student allowance of $350 isn’t going to happen. It’s too expensive and would bar major new spending in any other area. […]
