We’ve had three recent pre-election polls. While we wait for results on election day, let’s have a look at where things might be headed.
Pollwatch returns, with a Labour majority government no longer a complete certainty, and with another poor result for National.
The first post election Roy Morgan poll result has been released. Labour and the Greens have surged and National has gone backwards.
The erratic Roy Morgan poll has swung around again, Nats down 4.5% to 45% and Labour/ Greens up up 5.5% to 43%. Worryingly for the B-team, government confidence fell a “whopping” 10 points.

NZ is heading in the right direction, say 56.5% of NZ electors (down 3%).
National on 49%, GR + LAB 41.5%. Government confidence rating up 9.5 to 131.5.
National is at 50.5%. LAB/GR down 7% to 38%. The Opposition is still struggling to gain positive traction with the voting public.

Yesterday’s Roy Morgan poll looks good for Labour, but individual polls are noisy. Much more importantly, better measures such as the Pundit poll of polls are also looking good for the political Left. Let’s see Labour and the Greens extend their lead to establish a clear majority, without NZF or any other party holding the balance of power…

Here’s the trend for the past six months of Roy Morgans projected to the next election.

Like the recent Fairfax poll, yesterday’s Roy Morgan shows a significant swing from National to Labour.
From the miscellaneous bits of news department – a particularly grim Roy Morgan poll, and the announcement that Sue Bradford is standing for Mana against Paula Bennett in Waitakere.
Very little change over the last three Roy Morgan polls. Which suggests to me that voters still aren’t really paying attention.
TV1’s poll on Sunday was supposedly curtains for CGT, so what does it mean that the latest Roy Morgan has the Nats down 5% and the Left in striking range of an upset win? It means don’t draw instant conclusions linking one poll to one policy (although it must be tempting when you’ve spent $30K getting the numbers) – watch the trends.
