Should Luxon join Trump’s Board of Peace?

US President Donald Trump who recently oversaw the invasion of Venezuela and is threatening to invade Greenland, which is part of Denmark, is proposing a Board of Peace to oversee the rebuild of Gaza.

Aotearoa’s own Christopher Luxon has received an invite to be part of this august group.

And he is apparently thinking about it. Even though the cost to the country would be a billion dollars US if he wanted to stay on past his first term.

From Radio New Zealand:

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has been invited to join US President Donald Trump’s ‘board of peace’ for Gaza as the White House tries to push beyond the ceasefire.

A draft charter for the organisation, which will be chaired by Trump, has been sent to a number of world leaders – including Canada’s Mark Carney, Türkiye’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Argentina’s Javier Milei.

It is unclear exactly how many countries have received invitations.

A spokesperson for the prime minister said he welcomed the beginning of the next phase of the peace plan for Gaza.

He was invited to join the board and will give it “due consideration”.

Bloomberg revealed the text of the document said each country that accepted the invitation would be represented by its leader and would be given a term of “no more than three years”.

If a country wanted to stay on, Bloomberg said, it would have to make a cash contribution to its efforts of US$1 billion.

It appears that a number of International leaders have been approached.

For instance Russia’s Vladimir Putin, whose country has recently subjected the Ukraine to nearly as bad treatment as the Israelis have subjected Palestine to, has also received an invitation.

And it appears that the Board of Peace is not only intended to bring peace to Gaza but also to effectively replace the United Nations.

From the Guardian:

The [Board’s] charter states: “The board of peace is an international organisation that seeks to promote stability, restore dependable and lawful governance, and secure enduring peace in areas affected or threatened by conflict.” It adds that the board should have “the courage to depart from approaches and institutions that have too often failed”, likely to be a swipe at the UN.

Interim appointments include Trump himself as chair, Marco Rubio, former British prime minister Tony Blair who brought shame to the Labour movement by being a willing supporter of the totally bogus invasion of Iraq, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, the World Bank president Ajay Banga, and Trump’s son-in-law and long-time adviser Jared Kushner.

I am not sure what Luxon needs to consider.

If he immediately said “this is completely stupid and Aotearoa will not sign up to this” he would go up in my estimation. If he took a week or so and then said “this is completely stupid and Aotearoa will not sign up to this” he would still go up in my estimation but not as much.

If he takes longer than this then he is balancing every principle of International independence that this country has proudly adhered to ever since the second world war with the fear that any backlash may affect his re-election chances.

If so he is a piss poor leader.

He should follow the example of French leader Emmanuel Macron who declined the offer very very quickly.

Trump responded appropriately and with due respect for the French leader’s reasons …

Nah just joking Trump behaved like the man child he is, published private texts that Macron had sent to Trump trying to resolve the Greenland issue and then threatened exhorbitant tarriffs on French champagne.

Luxon should have nothing to do with this insane proposal and should say so now and publicly. It will be a measure of his quality as a leader how long he takes and how he responds and things do not look good.

Absolutely not, hell no, for a plethora of reasons as outlined above.

But a weak leader wanting to make a splash on the international stage. It might be tempting to Luxon to have an international diversion from the sorry affairs of state at home.

Would you think that that is what the Canadian Prime Minister is doing?

Carney has signed Canada up to the thing? Is he in political trouble at home?

Looks like he wants to be a freeloader: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-board-of-peace-countries/

Canada has said it won't pay to join… On Monday night, the president threatened France with 200% tariffs on French wine and champagne – which would likely make those products far more expensive for Americans – if the French don't join the board. The White House hasn't yet said whether Mr. Trump was serious or whether he was joking.

Good luck with the waiting on that! T's ploys seems designed to trend along the mid-line between both options. Carney seems to be doing okay currently:

A new Liaison Strategies national survey finds the Liberals widening their lead over the Conservatives. Among decided and leaning voters, the Liberals lead with 40% to the Conservatives 35%, with the NDP at 11% and the Bloc at 8%. Meanwhile, Mark Carney’s approval rating is up once again to 57%. https://press.liaisonstrategies.ca/federal-tracker-liberals-widen-lead-to-5-40-to-35-copy/

Making champagne more expensive for yanks seems unlikely to be bad for Trump. Probably stocked up at Mar-a-lago already. Likely to tell the media that it's just a drink for effete liberals anyway.

It's a terrific opportunity for Chris A to be statesmanlike. For Chris B, likewise. They ought to organise a joint media conference to present a united front.

Why? Well, united fronts were real big in the late '60s, so its high time they got revived. Folks are always into nostalgia, makes em feel good.

The Chrises could present the media circus with a simple foreign policy intitiative that all can understand: "Hey look Don, we just don't happen to have a billion dollars lying around in our spare cash stash at the moment, sadly, so we must decline your generous Board of Peace offer. Good luck with the other nations though!"

Hey look Don, we just don't happen to have a billion dollars lying around in our spare cash stash at the moment, sadly, so we must decline your generous Board of Peace offer.

They can't even find a measly billion? Whoever invited these weaklings – you're fired!

It’s nothing more than a Trump scam, on the constant prowl to extract as much money out of any possible thing he can manage. It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if Luxon , because he is really thick and stupid to boot, is considering it, after all …EXPOSURE…and of course it’s only a billion dollars, not his money ha ha ! No it’s bloody ours. Trump has learnt a lot from his dealings with the Mafia, it’s a lure in and if you reneg in the 3 years, you are dog tucker, and don’t forget the hidden top ups in the meantime. Trump himself is dog tucker after the midterms so he’s not worth having anything to do with.

I have been wondering what the govt Minister of Foreign Affairs has to say about this? Surely the Board of Peace scam will be contrary to putting NZ First?

Another angle Lux could use is his experience running an airline. "The main thing is that this Board of Peace must be able to fly. You need competent managers to supervise the groundwork that enables flight. I'm good with that."

Luxon’s international outlook was underscored by repeated references – five of them, across his speech and subsequent interviews – that there are “195 countries in the world”… .if Luxon doesn’t count Palestine, maybe he swaps in Greenland? At least twice on Monday, he puzzlingly described Greenland as “a sovereign state”. It is not a sovereign state; it is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/21-01-2026/christopher-luxon-and-the-195-country-election

So, if Winston tells him that, Lux can pivot on the point. "Hmm. I could visit the king and explain to him how to get things off the ground. Are you sure we haven't got a spare billion lying around?"

In my opinion, the name would be better “Board for Peace” rather, but in reality, it should be “Board for Peace Prize”. We know how Trump handles unrequited demands for recognition and praise and (some) people have to pay the price for this.

  6. Subliminal 6

The "Board of Peace" is simply a Trump enrichment scheme concentrating power in his hands. The enterprise rests on the sellout UNSC Res 2803 which gives it international legal weight. Trumps term would be lifetime with no three yearly cash injections. Although Res 2803 deals with Gaza, the word Gaza does not appear even once in the BoP charter. Each member has one vote except that Trump has veto powers giving him effective control.

Although the charter stipulates that the BoP would work by a one-country-one-vote rule and majority decision, in fact, the powers of the Chairman at any time reign supreme. He has sole discretion over who gets invited to join the BoP and who must stay out. He has a veto over all board decisions, and he alone gets to create sub-organs of the organisation…

Member states purchasing permanent seats in the organization and later injecting probably even more money through donations transform the BoP into an international wallet for Trump. The charter authorizes the BoP to establish accounts, hold assets, and receive funds without meaningful external oversight or even a dispute resolution mechanism (the charter states that the Chairman has ultimate decision-making power in case of disputes. Ha!). Combined with its international legal personality, this creates a vehicle for large-scale capital aggregation and investment insulated from national laws…

Once ratified by three states, the charter acquires treaty status under international law and, in conjunction with UNSCR 2803, the BoP even becomes a United Nations-approved international organisation. Its officers and subsidiaries thereby gain diplomatic immunity and extraterritorial privileges. Like the UN, it will operate outside host-state jurisdiction, shielding its leadership—including Trump—from prosecution or domestic legal constraints.

And what of Gaza? Well for Trump Gaza is of no consequence and will be left to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza

The Board of Peace is not a rival UN. It is something more idiosyncratic: a personalized international organization that will most likely function as a business vehicle for Trump and his (family) entourage. Hence, the new charter speaks of “Peace Building” as the organization’s main goal. In the context of what we know about Trump, we'd better assume that this means mainly “building” stuff and doing business without much peace to be expected.

As Micky says, even just considering participation in this scheme shows where Luxons morals lie. I have not heard anything yet from Hipkins but he must also make clear his stand as I expect he would inherit the board seat in the event of winning the election.

Luxon can, the Prime Minister… absolutely not.

It's clear enough why men like Witkoff and Kushner would be happy to be on this board – the opportunities to direct cash into their own companies will be huge. It's not at all obvious why the leader of a country would want to be involved with it.

Gaza will make rebuilding Germany after WW2 look a doddle. Germany was less destroyed than Gaza, its people had accepted defeat, wanted peace and were happy to be rid of the Nazis, and it had the benefits of a highly educated population with a historical background of strong economic and industrial capability. Gaza has none of that and is still run by people keen to divert any aid money and building materials towards prepping for the next war. Any national leader volunteering for this gig is Brer Rabbit picking up the tar baby.

Perhaps the leaders of countries would be required to legitimise the otherwise indefensible morally reprehensible criminal activity…just a thought.

  9. Andrew Riddell 9

Middle East Eye published a copy of the charter for the Board of Peace. Every decision has to be approved by the chair. And the chair appoints his/her successor. This is not an attempt to replace the United Nations, it is an attempt to set up a world emperor with vasal states and courtesans.

  10. thebiggestfish 10

He should not join. It is nothing to do with us down here in New Zealand. Whilst I hope it works; I wouldn't bet on the middle east seeing peace in my lifetime….and I am only 30.

Side note, you have a very loose definition of invasion if the US incursion into Venezuela meets your threshold ha.
