Does anyone know what went down with this post over at Kiwiblog.

Farrar apparently said something not very complimentary about Jonathan Coleman, then redacted part of it, and then started editing posts and handing out demerits to right wingers who had repsonded to (presumably) the deleted part.

    Anyone got the original post?

  2. 3

    Ah, found it.

    The deleted paragraphs was:

But more disturbing is that his response is open to a number of interpretations, one of which is quite malicious. I will give Jonathan the benefit of the doubt and hope he wasn’t meaning anything sinister by his comments, but regardless it was a pretty ugly display which is best left to the likes of Mallard.

UPDATE: I’ve deleted one paragraph, having been satisfied that I was being overly sensitive in my interpretation have been given a bollocking by Party HQ, and having now viewed the video realised what side my butter is spread upon, the exchange doesn’t seem particularly unusual. My sincere, everlasting, and grovelling regrets if the original post upset anyone at HQ.

On Morning Report this morning… Law commission to look at relationship between ‘media’ and the law. Not sure if this is in reaction to Cameron Slater being an idiot online, then claiming he’s just mentally unstable in court… or if this was just National getting one of the lackeys to create a furore to bring in legislation someone had wanted all along.

    mp3 from morning report – http://podcast.radionz.co.nz/mnr/mnr-20101015-0614-Law_Commission_to_review_Wild_West_of_internet-048.mp3

edit: didn’t realise it would embed that mp3… you can get ogg or asx from here http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/morningreport

[lprent: Does it automatically for MP3’s. Bit of a nuisance when you don’t have flash setup on chrome for linux (correcting now) ]

The blogger in question ran his own website and so was an editor.

People chatting to each other who have no reasonable expectation that the
speaker has any authenticity, or any desire to authenticate, their works
should not be held to the same standard as a news site.

If you walk into a public space and over hear people talking, chatting,
then you do not expect what they say to be turthful, factual or even authentic
(it could be two artists playing nazi’s).

People will guess who is under a suppression order, are they in breach?
Can we even talk about suppression orders? Yes, can we say that sounds like
the guy in parliament. sure why not? We don’t name them because we can’t
have complete confidence who they are, Whale did however and a court
found that he breached the law because even though he thought he had not
given enough information, he did say he knew! He made a claim that
      he was authentic. Author-enic

“Unfortunately, there are times when victims are going to come across people who are serving community-based sentences,” she says.

    http://www.3news.co.nz/Couch-WINZ-offices-put-victims-at-risk/tabid/423/articleID/181409/Default.aspx

The Social Development Minsiter abdicates here responsibility to those seeking assistance!

Criminals are bad, there everywhere, get over it! Nice, National policy toward crime! get over it!

Government has a duty to the deaf, the blind, the wheelchair bound, but not to victims? What
was the crime levy about then?

Government spends millions making public spaces accessible, but the Minister thinks
accessing welfare is different? How so?

National want those on probation to feel normal and be treated like every other person
in seeking income support. So it puts them right in with general population. But then
its not the general population, the argument that Bennent uses is flawed, welfare is
for excusively income deprived. Government supports and is involved in all kinds of
activities, like border control, they don’t have readily identifiable probation staff at
one border point! Sure if probation staff were at all WINZ officers and looked like
any normal WINZ staff member, then the policy might work.

The statement that those on probation are everywhere would be feasible, but
not after someone has just come up to you and said, that’s the problem, WINZ
brings attention to those on probation – that’s the problem. Associating welfare
    with criminality.

But there is still the crisis, that WINZ staff need to clarify with a clients Doctor
any potential harm to the patients recovery WINZ might pose.

Criminals should meet probation staff seperately from welfare provisions.

“I don’t think we could treat that lightly. I think we should look into it, and I’ve asked both departments to do that.”

much as I hate to say anything construed as support for NACT – I think you’ve jumped in a bi quick here. It was the Police minister and she said that they will look into it

    RE: This

“Rich Iott doesn’t have an anti-Semitic bone in his body,” said Parker, who sought to distinguish between a Naz1 uniform and an SS uniform, which he said is what Iott is wearing in the now-famous image.

The Naz1s were Adolf Hit1er’s party — and became shorthand for the German military under his rule — while the SS was an elite squadron of soldiers and law enforcers responsible for a variety of war crimes

I love that he feels he needs to explain who the Naz1s and the SS were. Says something about the audience.

So, a couple of weeks ago my ADSL speed dropped from8Mb/s to 2Mb/s. Rang Orcon and they sent me out a new modem to test to see if it was the modem. Well, the new modem turned up and it made no difference as expected (by me at least).

The problem? Telecom cabinetised me. Instead of being ULL and connecting directly to Orcon’s equipment at the exchange I’m now connecting to Telecoms cabinet and then connecting Orcon’s equipment. Possible solution to the low speed? Go on a more expensive UBA (Telecom wholesale) plan.

Privatisation – screwing the infrastructure up for more $$$.

PS, Labour and other Left partries – Get us back our network so that we can have decent connections and service again without being ripped off.

    1. 9.1

So, what do you think of Telstra? Can avoid copper wires with a cable plan… doesn’t help much at the price, but you will get your speed back. Tho, an even better idea is having decent infrastructure with fair access guarantees.

        1. 9.1.1.1

ahh… in my mind you were either my friend who goes by the moniker Lord Bastard at times, or related to the old Wellington band Draco Aerius. Guess this proves the adage ‘assumption is the mother of all.. umm… mistakes?’

      1. 9.2.1

Not that I recall. Got link?

Although, ATT, I thought that was probably the best idea even though Telecom have seriously run it down since 1990.

        1. 9.2.1.1

Not off hand, but it was about the time of the unbundling plan. Theresa Gattung made the offer as an alternative, and I think the likes of Bernard Hickey supported such a move (the guy was starting to convert even then…)

The goverment ruled it out, presumably because it was polling to high to examine any social democratic ideas.

I’m still waiting for the show of outrage from the Left Wing over the racism displayed by Indians who complained Jacinta Lal doesn’t look Indian enough to win the Wellington Miss IndiaNZ title.

After all the commentary on this website about Paul Henry’s comments it is supremely ironic that only a few days later we hear about appalling and outright racist remarks from individuals in the Indian community – comments ignored by the mainstream media since April, and which have only come to light since Henry was pilloried. It’s a story that has rippled around the world, just like Henry’s.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1320117/Indian-beauty-queen-Jacinta-Lal-accused-looking-Indian.html
    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/indians-abroad/Miss-India-NZ-doesnt-look-Indian-enough/articleshow/6744889.cms
    http://www.theage.com.au/lifestyle/beauty/miss-india-not-indian-enough-20101014-16kz6.html

Still waiting for Joris de Bres to condemn the racist criticism of Jacinta; waiting for the Indian High Commissioner to apologise; waiting for someone, anyone who regularly blogs for the Stranded to condemn these comments; waiting for criticism of India’s caste system (which may not be racist, but is just as discriminatory); waiting for a Kshatriya to apologise to a Dalit; waiting, waiting…

    1. 10.1

Dude, the thing about Henry was that he said it as part of his job on a state owned tv network. Please try and keep up

People say racist crap all the time without there being huge outrage about it.

People may think ‘shit that’s racist, you shouldn’t be racist”

But that’s different from saying “why is there a guy being paid by an SOE to say racist shit on the TV”

So the reason there is a different reaction? They are different things.

For the record, “hey, racist people! quit that shit already alright”

You can quote me on that.

    2. 10.2

Yes, such things are just as stupid now as they were when PH said them.

Admittedly, it does happen to be a competition for race…

    3. 10.3

I’m less concerned when I don’t own part of the organisation as I do for TVNZ as it is state owned. As far as I can tell my government doesn’t own any beauty pagents. I don’t have shares in it. I don’t work for it. Therefore I’m not responsible for any bigoted dickheads in it.

I don’t attend pagents so my usual response of verbally torturing bigots that are in front of me doesn’t apply. I do that for fun. But it isn’t any fun when I can’t see them squirm.

I’d suggest that you need to wean yourself off the dogwhistling and use your frigging brain for a change – assuming that one exists of course. You look like a stupid idiot.

Of course I do have a stake in this site. So I guess I should take the responsibility and look at the idiot trolling of joe bloggs… But it is a sunny day.

      1. 10.3.1

a beauty pagent is not an SOE – ergo, racism at a beauty pagent can be comfortably ignored – you are seriously warped Lynn

    4. 10.4

      @Joe Bloggs

      She won.

Ergo, pageant organisers not racist. Judges not racist. Community as a whole, not racist.

A few individuals racist. They don’t represent the community, fortunately.

You’re an individual. You’re stupid. You don’t represent New Zealand, fortunately.

Next time, do and try and read these stories first, before you embarrass yourself.

      1. 10.4.1

@ Gobsmacked, fair do’s. You can’t criticize a man for being stupid. He has every God-given right to be stupid. Not only that, but he has the right to show everyone he is stupid by stupidity.

        It’s his freedom of speech.

I love using the arguments of the RWNJ against them.

      2. 10.4.2

… so you think it’s OK because a few individuals made overtly racist comments at a beauty pagent,

but if Paul Henry makes fun of a woman’s name he’s labelled a racist.

You idealogues must have very finely tuned racism meters to be able to come to that conclusion.

As for freedom of speech, don’t come the raw prawn with me, cock. Commenters on this site have vilified Paul Henry for exercising his freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is not freedom if it means you can only say things which are tasteful and respectful and don’t offend anyone.

        1. 10.4.2.2

No, Joe, Paul Henry exercised his right of freedom of speech to be racist and stupid. He did it on state owned TV. That concerns me. Otherwise, he can be as stupid and as racist as he likes- it’s his lookout if we think he’s stupid or racist, or both. That’s my freedom of speech.

I’d never come the raw prawn, cock, whatever that means, not being an Ocker.

        2. 10.4.2.3

“… so you think it’s OK because a few individuals made overtly racist comments at a beauty pageant”
Has anyone said it was OK? No, they haven’t… (Corrected your spelling for you also, cos that’s the kind of person I am 🙂 )

Ok, the tea party movement is not just a bunch of ngati redneckis americanus repackaged to stop smelling rebublican so stop staying that. They are concerned primarily with corporate welfare and bank bailouts and lobbyists and stuff so liberals should actually support these guys because they are allies.

This is why they like Glen Beck so much who is not selling moonbeams to meatheads so stop saying that.

The fact that Glen Beck just told his faithful, populist and anti-corporate welfare fanbase
to donate money to the US Chamber of Commerce
so that the corporate lobby group can have a bit more influence,
is actually a very subtle but damning condemnation
of big business’ influence on politics.

    Stupid lefties.

Looking at the comments this one seems representative of the dross. Half-thought through, half-spelt. probably an echo of some misogynistic utterance of the past.

“*Once elected goverments become dictors. Alfred”

        1. 12.1.1.1

Saw another comment there describing the USA as the powerhouse of the world….whoever posted it ought to go and have a look at how well the US are doing economically, and in Afganistan…times have changed. The poster is obviously way behind.

There is some quality crazy there Simon.

To paraphrase the old song, What’s she building in there?

Some sort of rube contraption by the looks of it.

Got to keep up with the new drugs that young people use to play russian roulette with their brains and lives. Making young people pay for their treatment may be a way of them learning to take responsibility and value their own lives. Prohibition and punitive laws are not enough to stop it, and don’t deal with the problem. Simply making these illegal gives risk takers and anti-authoritarian people a spur to try and beat the system, be ‘naughty’ and open the way to criminal dealings and connections.

From Google “United Kingdom Methadrone: The Legal High Killing Britain’s Youth …
25 Mar 2010 … Numerous United Kingdom Youths have died after using methadrone, the new legal drug sold online and there is heat on the British Parliament …”

Surely the greatest news of the week ,perhaps the whole year is the wonderfull rescue of the Chilean miners. What an engineering feat,
What an example of leadership by the miners foreman!.
One cannot help wondering what the outcome would have been if Pinochet (the dear friend of Thatcher and Muldoon) had still been in power. Right-Wing politicians are not known for their concerns for working people . However the fact is that these miners have been saved .
Workers of the World Unite !!!!.

    1. 15.1

Absolutely, it’s wonderful glorious news… The solidarity of the 33 men is an example to everyone – or should be…
      Deb

  12. 17

I think John Pilger made the most sense of the media circus exploiting the mining disaster.

“The accident that trapped the miners is not unusual in Chile and the inevitable consequence of a ruthless economic system that has barely changed since the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. Copper is Chile’s gold, and the frequency of mining disasters keeps pace with prices and profits. There are, on average, 39 fatal accidents every year in Chile’s privatised mines. The San Jose mine, where the men work, became so unsafe in 2007 it had to be closed – but not for long. On 30 July last, a labour department report warned again of “serious safety deficiencies ”, but the minister took no action. Six days later, the men were entombed.”
