National’s abuse of Parliamentary process

Audrey Young writes on her blog that National would do well to heed the opinion of the Human Rights Commission who have today spoken out against National’s decision to rush through a number of pieces of important legislation under urgency – denying them proper scrutiny.

She points out that this is the very same Commission National “was prepared to listen to and applaud… when it appeared before the select committee hearing the Electoral Finance Bill”.

You’ll probably remember Bill English’s comment [Youtube] caught on the cocktail tapes that “there’s nothing beats winning in politics… despite all our highly principled statements”. At the time Bill refused to clarify what he meant. I guess now we know.

This is a crock, does the fact that one thinks a person should listen to an organisation on a particular issue entail that they should then do everything that organisation says always???

Matt, hmmm perhaps when its the human rights comission? John Boscawen and the Free speech coalition sure thought it was a good idea re EFA.

Besides, where is the suggestion that “they should then do everything that organisation says always” ? The Human Rights Comissioner makes a good point when saying : “this is a fundamental change to employment law which requires serious consideration” Or is that not a valid point?
