It’s great that the Modern Slavery Bill is progressing through Parliament and hopefully, it’ll become enacted before the election. Some people don’t seem not to quite understand what it’s about.

    https://newsroom.co.nz/2026/05/01/modern-slavery-bill-a-triumph-of-parliamentary-cooperation/

National’s Greg Fleming and Labour’s Camilla Belich have made history in using Standing Order 288 to get it done, bypassing the usual ballot process by getting 61 back-bench MPs to support it.

Newsroom’s associate editor Sam Sachdeva says they deserve an immense amount of credit, especially after Act’s Workplace Relations Minister Brooke van Velden declared it not a government priority and disbanded the leadership group Shaw was part of.

The slightly sensationalised title of the piece also suggests, sadly, that this kind of bi-partisan parliamentary cooperation is a rarity, an exception to the rule of partisan politics and binary bloc thinking.

    They are vipers.

    Stating the obvious

If the Maui field is shut down this year the Methanex plant will close this year.

Tis a pity that there is no continuing effort to get a wind farm off the Taranaki coast – allowing power and use of it in the region.

They are lucky to have the option.

The Hutt Valley would want it as well.

Interesting that Wairarapa mayors say amalgamation is all go, while Otago mayors are awaiting further instruction, and quoting MPs saying the process has issues

Looks like National's local body reform might be going good in some parts of the country, and not so good in others

      • SPC 6.1.1

They are proposing a unitary authority council with the end of their place within the wider Wellington Regional Council.

        • Graeme 6.1.1.1

How's the rest of the Wellington region getting on? And the rest of the North Island?

Down here Southland were 7/8 the way to amalgamation before the reforms were announced.

Otago I can see major issues with, Dunedin will see a Greater Otago council administered from Dunedin, the rest of Otago will be looking at two or more unitary councils, regionally based. This will get a bit messy along the way.

It seems National are encouraging / letting parts of the country that can coalesce do so. While they and figure out how to deal with the difficult ones. Could get interesting once they get to banging heads together stage. Suspect National will quietly find something else to do as it turns into an electoral liability.

          • SPC 6.1.1.1.1

National will let it drift, they are posturing with legislation for 4% rates increase caps, but the water reforms require big spending increases.

The slight of hand might be transfer of the spending to water bodies and their independent charging.

PS water meters allow a transfer from landlord rates to tenants for their water use. Another cost on those who earn income, but do not own property.
