I sometimes despair of Chris Trotter but every now and then he comes up with a brilliant gem. And his latest effort is one of them:

Sorry Jacinda and company but “relentless positivity” is not going to win the day! It will help raise the spirits of supporters, but it will be trashed by the govt.’s opponents. Already those opponents have won a major battle that will haunt the govt. for the next three years.

Thank goodness Winston Peters is there, and lets hope he teaches them how to beat the bastards at their own game. He knows all the tricks of the trade… he’s been there.

The Prime Minister is already delivering on the plan outlined before election day, and on her coalition agreements.

You can patronise her with the “relentless positivity” phrase. Her popularity may well eclipse that of Key. Hers is already more substantive because she delivers.

If you choose to interpret my comment as “patronising” Ad that is your prerogative, but that was far from my intention. Her positivity is a good thing and will win many people to her side, but at the same time she and her parliamentary colleagues will be on a hiding to nothing if they underestimate (as has happened time and again in the past) their Nat opponents’ ability to play very, very rough. The Left should have won this last election with a much healthier majority but they didn’t due to the DP machine. That machine is being overhauled, oiled and worn out parts are being replaced as we speak…

Then stop recycling Trotter horseshit. Do some actual analysis.

Chippie got played; he needs to learn the hard way after 9 years being ineffective as opposition. He will.

            1. 2.1.1.2.1.1

You need to distinguish Ardern’s public presentation from Chippies parliamentary performance. Simple.

Save you a lot of anxiety later.

Nah most will see it for what it is after nearly a year of trumpomania.

Over time, with a consistent narrative focused on their wrecking job, national will be correctly seen as the ugly side of corporate owned political entities.

NZ first appears to be what national used to be and that’s the real fear for them if Winnie creates a legacy based on good old kiwi social values.

This may well have more and wider public impact than the Nats’ cynical and underhand power games.

It is a very startling presentation of the desire to change the culture of parliament, away from the old patriarchal, abusive, combative model, towards something, not only family friendly, but flax roots community friendly.

And all this in the relevant context of paid parental leave.

John Campbell included an interview withe Trevor Mallard cuddling babies, in tonight’s checkpoint.

He looks totally dodgy, right out of a 1920’s speakeasy, running illegal hooch. And, his speech needs serious remedial work. I wouldn’t trust him under any circumstances and nobody else should either.

          1. 4.2.1.1.2

He got dealt to by Shane Jones in the House today. How can a man named Bridges live with the constant reminder of promising to build 10 bridges but achieving none. To the merriment of both sides.

And then have the Speaker call you Peter or some such and have to remind him that your name is Simon. And then tell you that he was lenient with you because you weren’t used to having to frame questions to Ministers.

The Nats would have to be well desperate.

Nah, Nikki Kay on today’s showing. Joyce tried hard but his testy finicky attempt at point scoring was well dealt to by a very direct and earnest to the point of impassioned Robertson, Collins glowered under her coiffure and Woodhouse got put in his well-earned place.

And Seymour postured. Later he fulminated on the evils of socialism and how the government wanted only to keep people in their poor place!

Great moment from Hipkins when he offered Seymour a Government supplementary because he stuffed up on his one and only question.

            Great sport, really, Parliament today.

            1. 4.2.1.1.2.1

My apologies to David Seymour. The clown talking about socialism was David Bennett. I assumed from the rhetoric it was Seymour. See the post “Doofus of the Week”. (could have been me, getting that wrong!)

Top work National: 9 years and the only substantial NZX listing – Xero – delists out of NZ. Barely makes a profit off $187m, and even that’s before interest, depreciation, tax etc cuts in.

    Key’s NZ went nowhere.

NRT. Are there too many farmers?

‘As if poisoning our rivers wasn’t enough, farmers are now asking whether we have too many native birds:
But why is the natural habitat of native birds too small? Because greedy farmers cut it all down. And now they’re using that past destruction to problematise and oppose attempts to remedy it.
Perhaps the real environmental problem we face here is not too many native birds, but too many farmers.’
