The sentiment from many returned soldiers and ANZAC commemorations is “Never Again“.

Never Again sending young people to be minced up in a war.

Never again to concentration camps, organised murder, imprisonment/starvation/extermination because you are part of a disliked minority or “the enemy”.

Never again to dropping bombs on civilian populations to terrorise them into military goals.

Never again, to invading another country for their oil, or other resources.

Never again to invading territory inhabited by a population that doesn’t want your rule.

Never Again, to brutal murder to suit the political objectives of despots.

It you, accept “our side” starting any of those ‘Never Agains’, you are also signalling that it is acceptable for the “other side”. You are part of the problem.

I'm particularly happy that with so few returned services vets around, ANZAC Day is now a celebration of every volunteer group going from Sea Scouts to FENZ to Police to nurses.

So I take it now as a remaining signal of civic cohesion:

    Always again. Us. And forever.

Never again to forcing civilians into exile half way across the world, who will never see their homeland again.

The UN Charter was about the collective security of nations.

If no nation acts to prevent the other 5, then that is called enabling.

Unhappily, it is happening all over again.

You don’t want to rain on today’s parades, real rain has done that, but…the Pogues band nailed the disastrous Gallipoli campaign.

Stuff prints contrasts opinions on NZ defense spending from Nat MP Stuart Smith and Labour MP Arena Williams. Smith trumpets about the government's beefing up of weapons spend, whilevWilliams finishes with:

"ANZAC Day should remind us what defence is really for. Not power. Not posturing. But peace, and preparation for the challenges of the future. The question isn’t whether we will be pulled into more conflict. The question is whether we will choose resilience instead."

Powerful message from Labour, hitting the target.

It was the usual Labour weaselry. "Yes, let's have a military, but let's pretend they're really just there for civil defence emergencies and helping foreign countries with their own civil defence emergencies." No, let's not. Civil defence capabilities are important, but it's the ability to kill other countries' soldiers en masse when required that actually counts.

but it's the ability to kill other countries' soldiers en masse when required that actually counts.

Considering that most of that is achieved by remote methods by the haves as opposed to the have not, do you think nz can afford the tech weapons to join the haves.

  9. I enjoyed this post by Bomber. Especially the graphic at the bottom. It highlights the share prices of US weapons manufacturers the day after the October 6 attacks in Israel.

I guess they needed a new "War on Terror" to get the profits rolling in again.

How many trillions has the USA spent on its global wars, enriching a tiny few sociopaths, and murdering millions

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said both New Zealand and Australia needed to do more to ensure their defence capabilities are “sovereign”, and not controlled by another country.

Their biggest investment is a new sub base for the US or the UK to use.

Their sailors will train on US subs before buying old US nuclear powered subs to replace their own, that can use the base.

Longer term building new ones with the US as a partner.

He sees little progress towards Pillar 2 co-operation and makes no case for any co-operation to be linked to the nuclear arrangements of Oz with the and USA.
