    Churchill would have had something ascerbic to say about his namesake. Their claim about Winston being certain also rings true. Doggedly so. He could woof any minute. One could argue that he already has:

    dismissed accusations of racism as "drivel."

    Well, that's a legal matter and he was a lawyer. Just 1 legal opinion though. The justice market will readily supply a plethora of variants. You have to demand them, since any market works on the basis of supply & demand.

      Actually a good poll for Chloe Swarbrick and the Greens. Electorate polls this far out from an election are little more than party vote choices, transferred to the candidates. Most people are not engaged at all on their options (I'm a politics junkie unlike 95% of voters and I couldn't have named the National candidate before.)

      National won't win it and (or because) Labour won't really try to.

      it's a single poll, hardly a trend pointing to CS losing the seat.

      And the poll asked which party they would vote for in the candidate seat, not which candidate/party.

      If you look at the polling methodology they were not allowed to name the candidate but were only asked who they would give their candidate vote to. So complete rubbish.

    English isn’t even an official language in England.

    Perhaps mongrel would have been better though (bastards are an oppressed minority).

    NZ First MP Casey Costello said there was “value” in providing clarity in law of a language’s official status. “It was assumed the official status already existed. What we do today is turn that assumption into reality,” she said.

    She said te reo remained acknowledged in legislation and respected in New Zealand, but “in a mature democracy, we should be capable of acknowledging multiple truths at once”. “Recognising one fact does not require us to deny another.”

    The bill states that the legislative recognition of English would not impact the country’s two other official languages, te reo Māori and sign language.

    Multiplicity would strike the trad kiwi male as something invented by communists but here I feel solidarity with this woman for the first time. Trump would point out that he got there first with his concept of alternative reality but who cares? Main thing is that now we will use 3 official languages: a triad! Officialese will evolve thereby…

        No, can't generalise like that. Behaviour tends to be context-driven, so officials do have some operational discretion and many seem to use it.

        I see the 3-strand rope principle applying to officialese in future: users will adapt to applying any particular option of the 3 as they see fit. That was what my reference `evolve' was intended to signal. Evolution is an adaptive process.

        In the Deep Green view, evolution is part of the whole. Ecology prioritises operating context for any organism. Contingency drives survival choices. So we acquire a sense of matrix that conditions our expectations. Ecosystemic relations both inform and motivate us thereby. Resonant interactions drive us forward each moment.

      yeah, bit about bastard language was stupid and inflammatory and completely unnecessary. Pākehā have enough trouble remembering who we are without that bullshit.

    Some political thinking about us and our military spending etc. Good points from Jeremy Rose. (I thought of how we can find money to waste on posturing for dominance but we can't have ferries to link our islands and prevent more weakening and fragmentation.
