1990 levels would bankrupt the country.
Only environmental fundies would want that.

Thank goodness that isn’t National, not so sure about Labour though

      1. 1.1.1

But National has a track record of being hopeless about achieving anything in this area.

(From memory) In the 90’s they agreed to drop to something like 80% of 1990 levels by 2020. This statement is merely them saying that they lied.

        Edit: Here we go Wikipedia

The many different targets of National in the 1990s, none of which they ever started trying to act on.

The entry on fifth National government doesn’t even have an environmental section. Their most positive action was not completely abolishing the ETS – they just gutted it and made it completely useless instead.

This is appears to be a typical National Minister of the Environment’s view on appreciating nature…

        1. 1.1.1.1

How could we go back to 1990 levels, it’s just not achievable.

For a start we’ve grown by 1.3 million people.

I don’t think the line in the sand approach of Kyoto is really worth pursuing.

          Nice picture, btw.

          1. 1.1.1.1.1

Of course it achievable. Easily achievable in facet – just stop burning so much fossil fuels and decrease the cow population. Basically, just do industry to a level that supports us rather than trying to support the world.

          2. 1.1.1.1.2

The Greens actually have policies on how we can grow the economy while reducing emissions. Not sure if it will get us to 30% below 1990 levels, but at least it is an actual plan and an attempt. Why not rad their policies, to answer your question?

      2. 1.1.4

And the RWNJ proves, once again, that he hasn’t got a clue as to the economy, you know, actual use of resources. We could easily afford it if National and other conservative parties (not that they conserve anything) around the world stooped worrying and protecting rich peoples money piles and actually worked to do what was needed.

      1. 1.2.1

lol plan! lol don’t be absurd.
anyway we have an ETS! that’ll fix it.
The plan is to buy overseas “credits” from spurious traders at the cheapest price. Now how clever is that.

    2. 1.3

Why are they so duplicitous? I don’t think they can help it. No one who understands this is going to be deceived by this abominable target – it stinks when other developed Nations are committing to a 40% reduction on 1990 levels by 2030. NZ will be the Pariahs at Paris without a doubt. What the knock on effects down stream will be wrt trade who knows?
As for the complete and utter rejection of almost all submissions and scientific advice on the desperate need to make significant reductions urgently – well it’s just pissing in the wind with this idiotic lot They prove themselves time and again to be completely incapable of governance. The sooner they are out the better.
My apologies if I sound intemperate and grumpy – but that is just how I feel right now. An appalling decision, by and appalling Government.

I find the Young Turks, a bit conservative for my taste sometimes. But I like this rant from them on Greece.

I’m quite sick of all the people who think Greeks are to blame solely for this. Yeah I’m pointing a finger at you Gosman, and others.

You can’t have socialism were the poor pay for everything the rich get wrong. That is just stupid – but since 2008 it’s been official policy over the globe.

Let me stop and let you enjoy the video – has some great quotes in it.

      Like. Alot.

PS: had a bad dream the other night. NZ’s present PM former international banker as a mole for today’s international bankers. Thank goodness it was only a bad dream.

Good luck in Apia today RugbyJohn, you ‘essence of manliness’ hero you !

      1. 4.1.1

People like Gosman, clean power and BM are not intelligent enough to look at issues from more than one perspective.
What they are told to think by the corporate media is what they think.
It makes life simpler for them.

Even if the establishment succeeds in burying him – he will have achieved in articulating something no-one in Washington wants to hear.

Breath of fresh air thanks Adam. The Democrats are about where National is and the Republicans are much further to the Right. So a big gap on the Left. Go Bernie.

HRC thinks the nomination is hers by right. Hopefully Sanders will win it. I think he has a half decent chance. Hillary is embedded in the establishment and her presidency would be more of the same.
