Charlie Brooker’s school of news production

His formula appears to have been faithfully replicated here.

Our only significant divergence is the recent inclusion of a live cross to the news site webmaster who gleefully fills us in on ‘what’s hot’ on their site right now – often a heady mix of celebrity gossip, violence, stupidity, tragedy and cuteness.

The problem is, the “news site webmaster who gleefully fills us in on ‘what’s hot’ on their site right now” is merely telling us what our fellow citizens most favour reading about, which is indeed “celebrity” stories, grisly crime stories to give them a cheap thrill and reinforce their prejudices, and something about a cute kitten that’s found it’s way home.

I often console myself by reminding myself that people get the politicians they deserve. They also get the media they deserve – or at least that which the majority desires.
