Bill’s big policy flop
Fair to say that Bill English’s “big” policy announcement today was a total flop.

NoRightTurn: The police’s illegal raid on Nicky Hager’s home has got even more expensive
In the Manakau District Court later this morning the trial of Ben Rachinger on fraud charges related to a admitted solicitation attempt to hack this site by Cameron Slater begins. The trial is set down for 5 days. Unfortunately I won’t be there. However there aren’t any court orders to prevent me from expressing my views and advice on the trial.
Judith Collins is letting organised criminals off the hook as she insists the Police make burglary a priority.
Investigative journalist Nicky Hager has been awarded interim legal costs towards $475,082 spent suing police.
Police subjected a group of elderly people attending a meeting on assisted dying to random breath tests so that they could collect the identities of each person who attended.
We have had years of systematic under funding of the police and front-line numbers are falling. None the less police are now expected to attend every burglary. For the sake of this exercise in public perception other areas of police wrok will suffer.
The number of police (per head of population) is falling, and crime figures are rising. But no doubt National will play the “tough on crime” card again next year.
5 law enforcement officers shot dead in Dallas. The city’s worst day in 5 decades.
Good piece by Jo Moir on Stuff this morning, about National’s train-wreck week. Follow it up with Andrew Geddis on the legality of the Collins blurt.
Why did the police offer Cameron Slater the soft option of diversion when he doesn’t qualify?
It sounds like the Police have a lot of questions to answer.
The Police’s return yesterday of Nicky Hager’s data, equipment and belongings is – too little and too late – a measure of justice for Hager. But the process doesn’t end there, and open questions remain.
In the wake of the shooting of four police officers in Kawerau, it’s time NZ had a cold, hard look at our gun culture. We need an inquiry that addresses both legal and illegal gun ownership. But there’s a related matter that also needs looking at …
Research has been published showing police having treated African youth unfairly. How can this be so, when they have put in so much effort to engage ethnic communities.
Its bad enough that workers’ rights and conditions are being crushed by National Ltd™ but now Police have joined in. Again.
The police are “visiting” TPP activists – Key is cynically trying to blow the “law and order” dog whistle. But would he really go so far as to try and provoke open violence for political gain?
“Yesterday, the New Zealand Police informed Nicky Hager through their counsel that they are electing not to appeal the decision of the High Court given in December last year.”
“On 2 October last year the police raided our home and I had the hugely encouraging experience of watching hundreds of you coming to my aid on Givealittle: giving money and, just as important, sending kind messages and giving moral support. The financial support made it easy for us to decide to launch legal action…”
“Wellington High Court judge Justice Clifford issued his judgement today on the legality of the police search of Nicky Hager’s home on 2 October 2014.
The judge found that the search was illegal.”…
Yesterday the police raided the home of a 3 News journalist. This seems to be quite a trend in the Brighter Future.
About time the Police got around to becoming a “very evidence based” service. Building great relationships with academia is a sensible way to start.
Police censorship of research is causing widespread outrage today. Well done to Dr Gilbert and The Herald for bringing it all to light.
A recent surge in the level of systemic criminality, thuggery, and general incompetence which now defines the New Zealand Police Force.
The reaction to Westpac handing over Nicky Hager’s data to police is still playing out. Rob Hosking observes “a creeping authoritarianism from the current government”.
Westpac passing over Nicky Hager’s details was probably illegal, and may turn out to have been a very bad move…
In The Herald: “Despite the number of armed incidents recently police should remain unarmed, the Police Commissioner says.”
Astonishing release late on a Friday afternoon (dump time!) that the police will not be pursuing any action against Slater/Ede for hacking Labour’s website. Given a whole year to investigate, they didn’t manage to find out how to spell Nicky Hager or Tim Barnett’s names.
All frontline police will routinely carry tasers.
If the police have no intentions of enforcing those laws protecting computer systems, as they haven’t for Cameron Slater, then shouldn’t they tell us? I’d love to openly and freely hack into systems without legal retribution – just like Cam does. Why should we leave the fun to well connected technological idiots like Cam?
I/S at No Right Turn on the police “routinely demanding personal information from New Zealand companies – and receiving it – without any form of warrant or statutory authorisation”.
Nicky Hager’s lawyer claims that the police are using supposedly “sealed” information taken in the raid of Hager’s home.
Well that’s the opinion of Judith Collins at least.
There’s nothing particularly wrong with Bryce Edwards’ article except that it ignores how National Ltd™ Police Ministers have successively sat by and done nothing in response to the on-going police failings.
I/S at No Right Turn on today’s further revelations on personal information.
There are many failings outlined. Police were found to have largely treated women and girls with respect and compassion but their investigations were not robust or thorough, inadequate follow-up enquiries…
