Fix our tax law!

Multinationals exploit our tax laws to pay no tax in NZ. Matt Nippert has been doing great work on this, and his latest this weekend on Apple is a powerful example. Planned changes to our laws don’t go far enough. We need to fix this. What’s the downside? What’s the delay?

The Waitangi Experience

A guest post from Enzo Giordani’s outlining his personal experience of the latest Waitangi day celebrations at Waitangi.

Everything Contained. Everyone Led.

So what’s important? Millions on the streets and what might become of that, or how many more or fewer people attended a given President’s big day? Just asking…

Labour landslide – media roundup

Audrey Young: “The Labour leader has described the win as ‘a bloody nose for National’. It is more like a bloody nose, a black eye and broken jaw.”

Update: As of 11am not a single story on Mt Roskill appears on the online front pages of either The Herald or Stuff. What a surprise!

Why no leftie fake news?

Fake stories were widely shared by Trump fans before the election. Why is leftie / liberal fake news much rarer? A fake news writer explains.

Netsafe finally gets its act together on the HDCA – sort of… and inadequately

Apparently today, Netsafe will start acting as the “Approved Agency” of the Harmful Digital Communications Act 2015. This is an act that is meant to deal with some of the excessive online abuse and bullying. Unfortunately it doesn’t appear to me that Netsafe is currently capable of dealing with the task. Instead they look like incompetent monkeys.

The media double standard

Andrea Vance has attacked Labour’s Ready to Work policy and claimed that the policy does not add up, despite being told how the figures had been arrived at.

Deficient newshrub

According to the deficient newshrub on Saturday night there was a distinct lack of support from Labour for the Mt Roskill campaign. In reality 4 buses carrying more than 200 door-knockers including all the Labour MPs other than Little, went to Mt Roskill on Saturday afternoon.

All the best to Michael Wood, who got a great reception on the doorstop.

Disturbing.

Given the topic of this post, it seems appropriate not to attach an image.

Al Jazeera on NZ homeless – watch it and weep

Al Jazeera: Once a pioneer of the social welfare state, New Zealand now has over 40,000 people who are homeless, forced to live in their cars and in garages as a result of rapid house price and rent rises and a shortage of social housing. Al Jazeera … charts the country’s fall from and egalitarian society to one with deep divisions of wealth

Anti-Corbyn media bias

“When a democracy cannot rely on its press to provide its citizens with information about political parties that meets the basic standards of fairness, then we can expect a political process that is equally unbalanced.”

London School of Economics study.

Give it a rest Newshub

After their ridiculous Andrew Little witch-hunt blew up in their faces yesterday, Newshub still can’t let it go. Sad.

Orlando; Owen Jones On Homophobia.

Guardian journalist Owen Jones nails the failure of many to call the Orlando killings what they are; homophobic  terrorism. It’s not an excuse for anti-muslim hysteria, as Trump, Seymour and Peters would have it, it’s the worst single attack on LGBT people since the holocaust.

Where is Paula?

In the middle of a housing crisis the Minister of Social Housing Paula Bennett is nowhere to be seen.

Welsh Assembly.

A post to illustrate how fixed term parliaments work…off the back of some really woeful reportage.
