Let’s stop kidding ourselves.
The “Adapting to Climate Change in NZ” report.
The “Adapting to Climate Change in NZ” report.
Someone just did something sensible, and it’s frightening.
Guest post by Ed about the intellectual rigour of George Monbiot and David Attenborough and the rater strange response of Barry Soper.
Just over one month in the new Labour led Government and it is time to measure progress.
It’s no longer really working out (kicking the AGW can down the road), but we seem to be hooked into a peculiar form of madness even as everything appears to be coming apart at the seams. It’s beyond me…
The Queensland election is turning into one of those rare and weird ones in which a large-scale environment-versus-economy fight looms largest.
Petitions and links to further info on COP23.
A new report from the Deep South National Science Challenge highlights the infrastructure issues and that adaptation could require significant and expensive changes to stormwater and wastewater networks.
Sorry about the title. But seriously, what other reaction is there?
The Australian Government just released this ad about the Great Australian Bight and it’s surprisingly honest and informative.

National’s roads of national significance programme looks to be no more with an early casualty being the East West Link in Auckland, which per kilometre was destined to be the most expensive transport project the world has ever seen.
Yum! That would make for generations of ecstatic kids, no?
This post is too long to read. Its purpose is to serve as reference material, a “one stop” snapshot of where we are as a country. The mess that the new government inherits. The consequences of the nine long wasted years of National. The magnitude of the challenge ahead of us.

I suspect that ETS has become a political football in the next parliament, but probably not part of a coalition agreement with either National or Labour. My guess is that both NZ First and the Greens will want it off the table unless it is agreed that it will go. That leaves them able to vote against further stupid patches being added to it.
Four climate scientists offer a little bit of their personal stories, and their plans in relation to global warming.
The farmers’ protest in Morrinsville today unfortunately shows that we have made no progress in the 15 years since Bill English attacked the wrong PM with his “mad cow” insult. Meanwhile the effects of climate change have got worse, our options for dealing with it have got fewer, and the Nats don’t want you to know about $19bn of NZ property at risk.
Voting has opened for advance votes and the expectation is that it will be pretty heavy prior to polling day over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be out there voting today for Jacinda Arden as my local MP, and for the Greens as my party vote.
Jacinda Ardern has released Labour’s climate change policy – including zero net carbon emissions by 2050. Jacinda has called climate change “my generation’s nuclear-free moment”.

Meet Christiana Figueres, former executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and original negotiator behind the Paris Agreement. The text of James Shaw’s speech to the Greens Conference focussing on the Green’s policy response to Climate Change.
There’s a very good / depressing long read in The Guardian on the dangerous “weaponising” of cynicism by climate change deniers. One of the most interesting sections was a discussion of the way that voters are more forgiving of lies than hypocrisy.
This time last year, there was a smattering of posts put up about average global ocean and land surface temperatures. They didn’t make for comfortable reading.

Our economic paradigm (market capitalism) and oil don’t mix. False hope (BECCS) and survival doesn’t mix. Current political settings (Paris pledges produce 3- 4 degrees C warming with the US on board) and intelligent action don’t mix. Incrementalism (time is not on our side) and AGW doesn’t mix. Whatever can’t be mixed into some AGW solution needs to be flushed.
Scary, huh? Well, yes and no…
Denis Tegg has discovered details of Ministry for the Environment’s currently unpublished Guidelines for Local Authorities on Climate Change.  The data relied on would appear to already be outdated but suggests that towns such as Thames are going to face inundation in coming decades.
Once upon a time this country stood up to American and said no to nuclear weapons. Now we dare not say yes to saving the planet.
US Secretary of State and Oil Baron Rex Tillerson is visiting New Zealand next Tuesday. And 350 Aotearoa is planning to provide him with a warm reception.
Guess which two NZ broadcasters have disgraced themselves by lining up behind Trump’s lunatic fringe denier posturing.
Donald Trump has announced that the USA will be withdrawing from the Paris Climate Change Accord.
Why isn’t National taking active steps to curb our emissions? We committed to reduce to 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, instead we are expected to increase. This is a massive failure of vision, commitment, and competence.
I guess any sign of sanity is to be encouraged. But. When the Nats came to power there was a framework for reducing carbon. The Nats dismantled or weakened it. Now, nine long years later, they want Yet Another Study?
The US economy may start unravelling when because of rising sea levels boats in Florida are no longer able to clear canal bridges.
