Hone Harawira is getting the band back together
It’s useful with controversial politicians to hear what they actually say, and in context too. Here’s Harawira in his own words.

There are some pretty depressing political trends going on.

Hone’s back! The leader of the Mana party has announced he’s re-forming the Mana Movement and will stand again in Te Tai Tokerau. Is there a chance of a deal with Labour to strengthen the next Government?

“We request that you withdraw the financial veto certificate against the Parental Leave and Employment Protection (Six Months’ Paid Leave and Work Contact Hours) Amendment Bill.” You can sign the petition here.
Te Puea Marae, whose only “crime” in this the Brighter Future was to try and help the homeless, “has fears of ‘smear campaign’ “. Naturally Paula Bennett is the real victim here. And furthermore, it’s all Labour’s fault.
For eight long years National have been telling us that the 90 day trial (fire at will) law was all about creating jobs. Yesterday a new Treasury report showed that it had failed to do so. RNZ: “The government now says its 90-day trial period was never about increasing the number of jobs in New Zealand”. Of course.

It’s been a hard week, and many of us could do with some kindness and good news. Let’s take a moment to remember Matariki. What would Standardistas and other politically progressive people like to see for the coming year?
Or not. More National ideology burned to the ground by facts.
Jared Yates Sexton tweets about a recent experience he had when attending a Donald Trump meeting. We should all be worried.
A very sincere good morning to the “Park up for homes” folks who have just spent the night in their cars, protesting in support of the homeless.

So – like Canterbury, like Auckland, the democratic process can get stuffed as far as National are concerned.

The government that will pay you $5000 to leave Auckland and $3000 to move to Auckland has been selling state houses so recklessly that it is now considering building temporary ones. Headless chickens make more sense.
The Nats’ quota increase has now been described as “shameful and inhumane”, “stinks of a Government that doesn’t care”, “pathetic”, “mean-spirited and callous”, and more. Will they get the message?
As Bryan Gould put it – “In any other country, and especially in those where such deals are commonplace, no one would be in any doubt as to what had really happened. In New Zealand, however, we are naively inclined to accept the blank-eyed, slack-mouthed assurances that it was all a coincidence and that nothing untoward had happened.”

Brexit is looking more and more likely, and the consequences are difficult to predict…
One of Giovanni Tiso’s clever “Erratum” series.

“It turns out there will be no jobs on a dead planet.”
While New Zealand is struggling to maintain integrity around fishing and resource management, an ocean farmer in the US is leading the way in economic and ecologic sustainability. This is how we can do things differently.
The ham fisted attack on Hurimoana Dennis by Paula Bennett’s office must make National yearn for the heady days when Cameron Slater was in charge of their smears.

Paula Bennett’s leaked one too many times, as she tries to silence those who embarrass her. She needs to resign and take her authoritarian ways with her.
Guardian journalist Owen Jones nails the failure of many to call the Orlando killings what they are; homophobic terrorism. It’s not an excuse for anti-muslim hysteria, as Trump, Seymour and Peters would have it, it’s the worst single attack on LGBT people since the holocaust.

Has Paula Bennett leaked details of a police investigation into Te Puea Marae’s Hurimoana Dennis?
Update: Bennett has admitted that “her office” leaked. She should resign.
