Should be the national bird. The sunken continent Zealandia was the point of origin for almost all the living and extinct penguin species

Bah! I advocated a full slate of Gulls and Plovers, clearly our democracy is broken. I demand a new vote. #PeoplesVote #LibDemsSayRevoke

Great to see a variety of birds over the years winning TBotY, as it highlights the struggle that most of our native species face and the need to increase the great efforts made under difficult financial restraints from DoC and those volunteer organisations.

Not only that , but highlight some interesting other native birds. I didnt know we had so many shags, albatrosses and mollyhawks.

My favourites are always the diving ducks, just awesome when you watch them for a while.

This could be a challenge for dunners – was down there a couple of months ago and jeeze the water was puke then.

About three-quarters of Dunedin's main water supply could be out of action for up to a year after a massive blaze engulfed an area near Middlemarch at the weekend.

Voluntary water restrictions will likely remain in place over summer after fire burned across 4664ha of land at Te Papanui conservation park on Old Dunstan Rd.

…At a media briefing in Dunedin yesterday, Mayor Aaron Hawkins said the fire had eliminated the use of the main water catchment for Dunedin, the Deep Stream Reservoir.

Water from the catchment was contaminated by ash and a small amount of run-off containing fire suppressant chemicals.

Both the Deep Stream Reservoir and Deep Creek Reservoir were of strategic importance for the Dunedin City Council, he said, as they were the only reservoirs that could supply water to all suburbs in Dunedin.

Last year it was floods washing away some parts of the long distance pipes

      https://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/fears-city%E2%80%99s-water-network

Damage to the Deep Creek, Deep Stream and Southern pipelines dated back to July 2017, while the Silverstream pipe was damaged in 2015, he said.

The damaged section of the Deep Creek pipeline ran over a pipe bridge damaged in 2017, which subsequently failed during last month’s flood.

The Deep Stream pipe – carrying the largest volume of water of any of the pipes, at 38,000cu m a day – had been exposed by July 2017 flooding.

"This Government, also like the previous government, is also doing very little to deal with the infrastructure pressure from massive population growth driven by all the temporary workers. And the dirtiest secret of all is that's just the way home-owning and business-owning voters like it because it keeps government debt down, keeps interest rates low, keeps house prices rising and keeps wages down. Treasury also loves it because all those workers are pumping up the surplus with fresh income taxes and GST revenues, but without the infrastructure spending to go with it."

Not sure that its a secret somehow

The problem illustrated – what a sad day when thickos like this govern – disgusting creep imo

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has slammed the climate change concerns of "raving inner city lunatics" at a time when rural Australians are dealing with catastrophic bushfires, venting his frustration at questions about climate.

…"They don't need the ravings of some pure, enlightened and woke capital city greenies at this time."

Mr McCormack said it "galls" him when people raise climate change in relation to bushfires because of the concerns of "inner city lefties" and "raving inner city lunatics".

Australia is effected at present by the Antarctic oscillation negative position.

This brings colder wetter (westerly storm belt northel shift) to southern latitudes and dryer areas of northern nsw queensland.

The deep AAO is consistent with a smaller ozone hole this spring. This has also brought significant changes to the NZ sept/oct temps below 40s ie below average.

          1. 5.1.1.1.1

"This suggests that ozone recovery will result in a nearly complete cancellation (and possible reversal) of the atmospheric circulation effects associated with increasing greenhouse gases, in Southern Hemisphere summer, over the coming half century."

What do you think that means in relation to bush fires?

In 2013, the CSIRO released a report stating that Australia is becoming hotter, and that it will experience more extreme heat and longer fire seasons because of climate change.[2] In 2014, the Bureau of Meteorology released a report on the state of Australia's climate that highlighted several key points, including the significant increase in Australia's temperatures (particularly night-time temperatures) and the increasing frequency of bush fires, droughts and floods, which have all been linked to climate change.[3]

Should be a new election as he has served 3 terms and the constitution had been changed after his first term to only allow 2 terms. Seems like the usual ways a leftist president in South America are removed from office though. Has to be some US interference, they dont bother with facebook pages.

NZ journalist Philip Matthews talks about leaving the 'cult': https://www.metromag.co.nz/society/society-society/terf-trans-activism-cis-gender-critical

One of the things that snapped me out of it finally was a video by Natalie Wynn, aka [Youtuber] ContraPoints, titled “Gender Critical”, and she concludes that TERFdom is about the flimsiest cloak of feminist platitudes draped over disgust and hate. The word “disgust” is at the heart of it for a lot of people, even if they are unaware of it or refuse to admit it. A disgust that is prompted by what they see as a rejection of biological norms and the confusion of male and female categories.

      1. 7.1.1

tbf, Matthews has a pretty poor understanding of the gender critical feminist position, which makes me wonder how much of his previous position was about his own disgust.

Let me think about that arkie (check back later). It's a minefield, a literal social war with lots of nasty and stupid shit on both sides (GCF and trans activist), but I will try and find something that is relatively neutral. I should have said positions (plural), it's a wide range of ideas and actions.

Thoughts after the Google employees' strike

    https://aeon.co/ideas/solidarity-is-not-dead-how-workers-can-force-progressive-change

For many people, dissenting is an uncomfortable thing to do. Only when the sense of moral outrage reaches a tipping point will people take action' […]

'The pursuit of workplace fairness is not just a matter for the individuals who have been mistreated, maligned or manhandled. Justice is not just justice for me. It forms the heart of a community. What that community is collectively prepared to accept as fair and unfair defines its moral character.

Does anyone have an update on how far matters have progressed regarding a suggestion/proposal to introduce photo ID “Brothel Cards” similar to the old "Pub Card" (now the Kiwi Access Card), for entry in to massage parlours and certain night clubs featuring intimate stage shows or bar performances?

If so, when might it be likely to be introduced (if the legislation is passed)? Before or after the 2020 election?

    1. 9.1

Who came up with that idea? Don't recall it being mentioned before, and not sure of the need for it given the kiwi access card and DL.

      1. 9.1.1

        Thanks for that, McFlock.

It may have been one of those internal fake news items or scuttle bug that had been bandied around to create a stir, as some sort of joke.

Apparently it emerged and was distributed internally to some staff within KPMG and other legal circles just prior to the 2017 election.

I shall dig a little deeper.

The article cuts both ways from the headline: it's also a description of how a partisan senate can stop a genuine and well-deserved impeachment trial.

But it doesn't address what happens if the House investigation produces evidence that challenges the partisanship of voters from either direction, or what happens if state AGs think some of the evidence that comes up in the court of the trial is interesting to their own statutes. Tax declarations vs bank statements, for example. Senate isn't the only one that can press charges, especially after he leaves the presidency.

Anyone help me please? I haven't used my account for about 10 years and I've forgotten my password. Couldn't recover it thru wordpress, maybe I changed ISP and therefore email address. I created a new wordpress account with a new name and confirmed it, I was then locked out when I tried to log in thru the standard. Was it just that I logged in too soon after creating the account? There must be some sort of explanation that doesn't make me look like a total dick, probably?

    1. 11.1

I think we’d need a user name, email address or IP address to find your old account. Do you remember what user name you had back then? It’s not the one you are using today.

      1. 11.1.1

ok, I've found it, under the email address you are using today, but with a different user name. I'm not sure if that is connected to a WordPress ID, I don't think that is necessary, but let me check with Lynn.

I can reset your password (it will get emailed to you at the email address you used just now), but I'd like to check with Lynn about that too as that system has been a bit erratic in the past.

  7. 12

Ok thanks for that. I'd prefer to keep my old user name if possible to reset the password. Otherwise I suppose I can just comment like this.
