Nurses here in Mid Central are receiving the holiday pay remediation payments.

But there is a further kick in the teeth that these payments have bumped some folk up a tax bracket and there are tax consequences.

How is it just that back pay for several years is accounted for in the current financial year?

Common practice. Tax is paid on income in the year it is paid out.

I'm aware it's common practice, I wanted to know how it could be just.

These monies were earned over several years (up to 16), not paid because the state cocked it up, now the state is standing there with it's hand out.

Doubly insulting as there is no interest paid despite the state having the use of the dosh for that time.

The union is able to make compensation for the impost of the higher tax band a future award issue, that by seeking a payment in restitution.

Another point is that possibly/hopefully the paydate will have been agreed with Management by the Union members/delegates*.

As one of these* in a previous life we aimed to get new bands and back pay into members hands asap.

Often these fleetingly high deductions then became part of a tax refund after the end of the financial year when bands/tax were evened out.

But I know it is a pest when it does happen.

True. The union is putting it's hand up now and saying we could have done better here with giving members better advice.

Still sucks arse, through no fault of yr own getting a big tax bill because of the size of the state's boo-boo. (Or theft as an employer if you are not feeling kind).

My reckons say pay PAYE on it but as there is no intetrest paid, the payment has no bearing on yr tax band.

Liaison between the PM's Department and Ministerial Offices is such a complex job it requires staff to be experts in both media and government administrative systems.

The Onion satires government communication as a mix of deliberate evasion, absurd image management, and "everything is fine" narratives that mask failure. Their parodies frequently highlight the use of jargon-heavy, vague announcements to confuse the public and the spin of crises into public relations opportunities.

A ray of sunshine from the Bread and Circuses Dept.

Dave Rennie as the first Pasifica coach or the ABs. He is a man that can get the most out of a playing group, witness Manawatu back in the day.

This is a light hearted look at former coaches, their resting face and results.

"In the other, at the top of the image, Rennie looks into the mid-distance with an expression on his face like he’s just seen a chef open-mouth sneezing into his meal. His tenure promises to be a huge success."

    Amen to that.

The Black Caps will have ramped up the fear factor in the Rainbow Nation after their demolition of South African Proteas in the 20 over cricket World Cup semi-final.
