free-to-air sports

The comprehensive Commonwealth Games coverage on free-to-air TV is refreshing and something we need to see a lot more of.

overpopulation myth

Conversations on overpopulation are so often framed in a way that is racist and fail to acknowledge the unfair distribution and use of resources.  With the added dimension of seeking to punish the poor for problems created by the economically secure.

intersections

You can talk all you like about the economy and the 1% and the capitalist system and the environment and growing inequality, but if you can’t include an intersectional analysis into your description of the problem and into your solutions, then all that talk does not include me and will not be of any use to me.

investing in social cohesion

experiences of solidarity and support can be found across the planet.  they aren’t particularly hard to find, these many instances of kindness and humanity.  so why does it feel like we live in a world that is incredibly hostile?

can we just ignore it?

somebody says something stupid about muslims.  then it has to be picked up by every media organisation who rush around for comments.  of course they’ll find some muslims who will be angry and upset, given the serious stupidity of the comments.  then the media report how OUTRAGED those muslims are, as well as interviewing the original culprit to give more air to his views.

inability to access food

people are reporting that they have been unable to access emergency grants for food, simply because that are unable to reach WINZ staff to apply for one.

#TortureReport

finally, we have the release of the report that documents interrogation techniques carried out by the CIA.  it’s pretty awful stuff.

it’s not censorship, it’s market forces

the addition of judith collins as a columnist has some people calling for people to cancel their subscriptions.

the response has been the usual.  there are claims that this is censorship.  even though the choice to not purchase a product that no longer appeals to you is hardly censorship.
